UCLA and Outfest Announce Public Symposium and Film Screening Highlighting the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation

LOS ANGELES, CA – The UCLA Film & Television Archive and Outfest, a leading showcase for diverse, international lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) film and video, recently partnered to create the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, dedicated to collecting, preserving and showcasing LGBT films. As part of this landmark collaboration, the Archive’s Research and Study Center, Outfest, and the Association of Moving Image Archivists LGBT Interest Group have organized the Legacy Project’s first symposium, "Out of the Closet, Into the Vaults," which on Monday, April 10 will bring together filmmakers, scholars and moving image archivists to discuss the challenges of insuring the survival and accessibility of LGBT cinema. On Sunday, April 9, two prints from the Outfest Legacy Collection at UCLA will be screened as a kick-off to the symposium.

The "Out of the Closet, Into the Vaults" film screening and symposium will take place on the UCLA campus and admission to both events will be free and open to the public. Please visit www.cinema.ucla.edu for more information.

"April’s symposium will be the first time critical questions about the survival of and access to LGBT cinema will be discussed in a public forum," said UCLA Film & Television Archive Director Timothy Kittleson. "This is just the beginning of a long and important dialogue," he added.

“This symposium not only builds awareness of the urgency of LGBT film preservation, but it also connects the world of film preservation to academic researchers and filmmakers who need access to moving image archives,” said Outfest Executive Director Stephen Gutwillig.
