DOUBT Trailer

Directed and adapted by John Patrick Shanley from his own Pulitzer-winning play, Doubt stars Meryl Streep as a self-righteous nun determined to show the world that a well-liked priest at a 1960s Catholic school has had a sexual relationship with a teen boy, who happens to be the school’s first black pupil. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the priest. Also in the cast: Amy Adams, Viola Davis, and Joseph Foster.

I saw the impressive Doubt onstage in Los Angeles about a year or so ago. Although I’m a major Meryl Streep admirer, I can’t help lamenting the fact that Cherry Jones — relentlessly determined as the nun — isn’t a big movie name to reprise her Tony-winning stage role. The same goes for the outstanding Adriane Lenox, who won a best featured actress Tony, replaced by Viola Davis in the film version.

I also have trouble picturing Philip Seymour Hoffman as the handsome, athletic priest of the play. (Brian F. O’Byrne on Broadway; Chris McGarry on tour.) In fact, one important element in the effectiveness of Doubt was that the accused priest was such a handsome, likable fellow. I’m assuming the character will have to be somewhat rewritten to fit Hoffman’s looks and persona, but then again that’s quite possibly not all the character revamping the play will have undergone before reaching US movie screens on December 12.

Changes or no, Doubt is being buzzed about as a top contender for the 2009 Academy Awards.
