Juliane Köhler and Maria Schrader in AIMEE & JAGUAR

Aimée & Jaguar (1999) is one of the most powerful, most disturbing love stories I’ve ever seen. This classy German production directed by Max Färberböck, and written by Färberböck and Rona Munro (from Erica Fischer’s book, which was inspired by actual events), tells the story of two women, the Jewish lesbian Felice Schragenheim aka Jaguar (Maria Schrader) and the Nazy-sympathizing housewife Lilly Wust aka Aimée (Juliane Köhler), who meet and fall desperately in love during World War II — not a good time to be either Jewish or lesbian.

Flawless period reconstruction (production design by Albrecht Konrad), superb cinematography (by Tony Imi), and two of the most gripping performances in film history — those of Berlin Film Festival and German Film Award winners Schrader and Köhler — helped make Aimée & Jaguar the haunting, if gut-wrenchingly sad, love story it is.

That is such a great movie. I fell in love with both Maria Schrader and Julianne Kohler.
