MILK Trailer

Directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Dustin Lance Black, Milk tells the story of California’s first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk. Milk’s accomplishments while in office are barely remembered today, even though he helped spur the movement against a state ballot proposition that would have banned gays and lesbians from teaching in public schools. Instead, Milk is remembered as a gay hero/martyr: in 1978, the San Francisco supervisor was murdered — along with mayor George Moscone — by Dan White, a former cop who had recently resigned from that city’s Board of Supervisors. Blame it (at least in part) on junk food — or so the defense argued and the jury bought it.

In the Milk cast: Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, Josh Brolin as Dan White, plus Emile Hirsch, James Franco, Diego Luna, Victor Garber (as George Moscone), and Brandon Boyce.

I should add that Rob Epstein’s 1984 documentary The Times of Harvey Milk won that year’s Academy Award for documentary feature.

Focus Films will release Milk in the US on November 26. The film is another potential contender for the 2009 Oscars.
