WERE THE WORLD MINE Trailer

Co-written by partners Cory James Krueckeberg and Tom Gustafson (from Gustafson’s 2003 short Faeries) and directed by Gustafson, Were the World Mine tells the story of small-town teen Timothy (Tanner Cohen), who happens to be gay, ostracized, and in love with his private school’s top jock (Nathaniel David Becker). Timothy’s sole means of escape is his musico-magical world, filled with shining lights and singing athletes.
Enters a quirky English teacher (hilariously played by Wendy Robie of Twin Peaks), who decides to stage a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Timothy is cast as Puck and ends up playing the role offstage as well, using a liquid-spraying, purple pansy to spread love — of the sort that dares not speak its name — throughout his small town.
I’ve watched Were the World Mine twice from beginning to end. The first time around, I didn’t really get into it. The second time around, however, I got totally hooked. Something similar happened with François Ozon’s 8 Women. It took three viewings for me to become an inveterate fan of that film. And I believe I can say that I’ve become an inveterate fan of Were the World Mine as well, despite several clunky moments and a much too abrupt resolution. I’ve since watched bits and pieces of the film — the outlandish musical numbers are particularly addictive — dozens of times.
As a plus, the two young leads are likable — Cohen’s singing (I’m pretty sure that’s his voice) and stage presence are quite remarkable — while the supporting players are all highly effective, especially the three mature women: Robie as the challenging teacher; Judy McLane (of Broadway’s Mamma Mia) as Timothy’s mother; and Jill Larson, excellent as the town’s beautician-entrepeneur.
Also in the Were the World Mine cast: Zelda Williams (Robin Williams‘ daughter), Christian Stolte, Ricky Goldman, and David Darlow.
Were the World Mine, which has won about a dozen awards at various gay film festivals (including the jury prize at Los Angeles’ Outfest), opens tomorrow, November 21, in San Francisco (Landmark Opera Plaza), Berkeley (Landmark Shattuck), and New York City (Cinema Village). It’ll open in Chicago, Washington, and Los Angeles (Sunset 5 in West Hollywood) on December 12. Full screening schedule.
