ALICE IN WONDERLAND Box Office: $100 Million+ Weekend?

Alice in Wonderland is the latest record-breaker at the domestic box office, grossing $41 million on Friday. Tim Burton's version of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy tale is expected to take in as much as $110 million over the weekend. If so, the film will have the biggest first-quarter take (not adjusted for inflation) and the biggest 3D debut ever. For comparison's sake, Avatar grossed $77 million on its first weekend.

Additionally, Alice in Wonderland will likely have the second-highest non-summer opening ever, after the Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart-Taylor Lautner supernatural drama The Twilight Saga: New Moon, a November 2009 release.

The previous March record was held by 300, which grossed $70 million on its first weekend in 2007. Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ is the current record holder for the first quarter. The religious drama opened to $83.8 million in February 2004.

It should be noted that higher box-office figures don't necessarily translate into more tickets sold. It's still unclear how much of Alice in Wonderland's revenues are coming from 3D/IMAX screens, which charge a premium and can inflate revenues (in regard to the number of tickets sold) by up to 40 percent.

To date (also not adjusted for inflation), the best opening weekend at the North American box office belongs to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Batman and the then recently deceased Heath Ledger as The Joker. The blockbuster earned $158m on its first weekend in mid-2008.

Alice in Wonderland, which has received mixed reviews, stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and the voices of Michael Sheen and Stephen Fry.
