THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM Tops North American Box Office

The Bourne Ultimatum raced to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$70.2 million.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, whose United 93 received numerous critical accolades last year, the third film installment of Robert Ludlum’s Bourne novels was launched at 3,660 sites on Friday, replacing The Simpsons Movie at the No. 1 spot. The Bourne Ultimatum also topped the $52.5 million opening weekend gross of its predecessor, The Bourne Supremacy.
Last week’s big winner The Simpsons Movie fell to the No. 2 spot, earning $25.6 million in ticket sales from 3,926 screens. Directed by David Silverman, Homer and his family lifted their cumulative gross to an impressive $128.6 million after only two weeks in theaters.
Meanwhile, Walt Disney Pictures’ family adventure Underdog debuted at No. 3, taking home $12 million from 3,013 sites. Directed by Frederik Du Chau, the movie focuses on a young hound named Shoeshine, who sets out to save the world after a failed experiment gives him superpowers.
Down from No. 2 to No. 4, Dennis Dugan’s marital comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry scored $10.5 million this weekend, reaching a total haul of $91.7 million after three weeks in release.
Last but not necessarily least, Adam Shankman’s critically acclaimed musical Hairspray dropped from the fourth to the fifth slot, with a weekend gross of $9.3 million and a cumulative take of $78.9 million.
This upcoming week is a busy one, with three major releases vying for the top spot on the box office charts.
On Wednesday, buckle up for Daddy Day Camp, the sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 2003 hit Daddy Day Care. With Murphy out, Cuba Gooding, Jr., will take over as a father who’s in charge of a chaotic summer camp.
Opening on Friday is Rush Hour 3, Brett Ratner’s latest action-comedy starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. This time around, the Carter and Lee dou travel to Paris, where they assist the French in battling the Chinese mafia.
In Stardust, a science-fiction spectacle directed by Matthew Vaughn, a young man tries to win the heart of a star (played by Claire Danes) in order to protect it from an evil witch. Stardust will open in 2,300 theatres.
