Box Office: SHUTTER ISLAND No. 1; AVATAR Back at #2 on 75th Day Out

Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo in Shutter Island

Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo (above), was the #1 movie at the North American box office on Tuesday, March 2, with Avatar right on its heels, according to figures provided by Box Office Mojo. Martin Scorsese’s creepy thriller took in $1.93 million, a 9.1 percent increase from Monday, while James Cameron's sci-fi adventure grossed $1.48 million (+18%) on its 75th day out.

That's a significant increase for Avatar; it could be that people are trying to watch the film (once again?) before it disappears from most 3D and IMAX screens on Friday — that's when Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland opens.

Kevin Smith’s Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, was #3 with $1.4 million (+10.2%), followed by Breck Eisner’s horror flick The Crazies, featuring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell, with $1.2 (-4.5%).

At #5, Garry Marshall’s all-star Valentine’s Day took in $633K (+24.4%). The romantic comedy stars Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Carter Jenkins, Taylor Swift, and many others. Chris Columbus‘ adventure flick Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, starring Logan Lerman, was #6 with $512K (+3.1%).

The #7 movie was Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried romantic melodrama Dear John with $431K (+32%), while Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman, starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, was #8 with $395K (+4%).

Rounding out the top twelve were Jeff BridgesCrazy Heart ($318K, +51.2%), Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy ($188K, -0.5%), Sandra Bullock's The Blind Side ($114K, +37.4%), and the John Travolta-Jonathan Rhys Meyers action flick From Paris with Love ($108K, +22.6%).
