The Simpsons Movie by David SilvermanThe Simpsons Movie rose to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$71.9 million.

David Silverman’s big-screen adaptation of the famed TV series proved that after 18 years and more than 397 episodes, the Simpsons are as popular as ever. Opening at 3,922 sites on Friday, The Simpsons Movie scored an impressive one-day gross of $29.1 million.

Last week’s winner I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry dropped to the No. 2 spot, earning $19.1 million from ticket sales at 3,501 theatres, and reaching a cumulative gross of $71.6 million. The marital comedy directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Kevin James and Adam Sandler is lagging behind Sandler’s previous comedy Click, which went on to gross $87 million after two weeks in release.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix slipped from No. 2 to No. 3, pulling $17.1 million from 4,005 locations. After three weeks in theatres, the fifth installment in the ultra-popular series based on J.K. Rowling’s novels lifted its total haul to $241.8, and is $8 million away from beating the third Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Down from No. 3 to No. 4, Adam Shankman’s musical Hairspray continued to enchant moviegoers this weekend, collecting $15.6 million and reaching a cumulative of $59.3 after two weeks in release.

Finally, Scott HicksNo Reservations, which is a remake of Sandra Nettelbeck’s German drama Bella Martha / Mostly Martha, opened at 2,425 sites this weekend with $11.8 million.

This upcoming weekend, four major releases will compete for the crown at the North American box office.

In Walt Disney’s Underdog, a clumsy watchdog heads out to save the world after a failed lab experiment gives him the powers of a superhero. The movie was directed by Frederik Du Chau, the man behind the "family film" Racing Stripes.

Despite his superpowers, Underdog will face some serious competition from Jason Bourne, who will return for his third and last adventure in the The Bourne Ultimatum. Matt Damon returns in the role of the rogue agent who lost his memory and is being hunted by the people he once worked for.

Napoleon Dynamite fans, beware, Hot Rod is here. Andy Samberg from Saturday Night Live stars in this nutty comedy that follows the adventures of Rod Kimble, a wacky wannabe stuntman.

Let’s not forget to mention the release of Bratz, the movie based on the popular dolls. The plot is pretty simple and superficial: four teenage girls team up to take on the mean cliques at their high school. Enough said.
