RESIDENT EVIL Scares Away Competitors at the North American Box Office

 

Resident Evil: Extinction by Russell MulcahyResident Evil: Extinction soared to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$24 million.

Helmed by Russell Mulcahy, the third installment in the series based on the popular Capcom video game outperformed both opening weekend grosses of its predecessors. The first Resident Evil collected $17 million after opening in 2002, whereas Resident Evil: Apocalypse pulled $23 million in 2004.

New entry Good Luck Chuck ranked second this weekend, earning $14 million from ticket sales at 2,612 locations. Lionsgate’s romantic comedy directed by Mark Helfrich, and starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba was slammed by critics, but delivered a strong performance despite its R-rating.

Last week’s winner The Brave One slipped to No. 3, bringing home $7.4 million from 2,755 locations. The Neil Jordan-directed drama starring Jodie Foster lifted its cumulative gross to $25.1 million after two weeks in release.

Down from No. 2 to No. 4, James Mangold’s western 3:10 to Yuma pulled $6.4 million from 2,902 sites and reached a total haul of $37.9 million after a solid three-week run. The movie starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe follows a troubled rancher on his quest to put a ruthless criminal on a train heading to a high-security prison.

Meanwhile, David Cronenberg’s dark thriller Eastern Promises jumped to No. 5, banking $5.7 million. The movie, which opened in selected cities past week, expanded to 1,404 markets this weekend, reaching a total of $6.5 million.

This upcoming weekend, three major releases will compete for the No. 1 spot at the box office.

Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx in The Kingdom

In The Kingdom, the most anticipated movie to hit theaters on Friday, an elite FBI response team is sent to investigate the bombing of an American housing compound in Saudi Arabia. Directed by Peter Berg, The Kingdom stars Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, and Chris Cooper.

Walt Disney Pictures releases The Game Plan, a comedy directed by Andy Fickman and starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as a top NFL quarterback whose life takes a spin when he finds out that he has a 7-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Fickman’s previous comedy, She’s the Man, starring Amanda Bynes, grossed $33.6 million domestically in 2006.

Also set to open is Feast of Love, a dramatic exploration of love set among a community of friends in Oregon. Helmed by Academy Award-winner Robert Benton, director of Kramer vs. Kramer, Places in the Heart, and the more recent The Human Stain, Feast of Love stars Greg Kinnear, Selma Blair, Morgan Freeman, and Radha Mitchell.
