SUPERBAD Rules Over North American Box Office for Second Consecutive Weekend
Superbad gloriously defended its No. 1 spot at the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$18 million.
The teen comedy directed by Greg Mottola, and starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera defeated all new major releases, keeping the crown at the top of the chart and lifting its cumulative gross to $68.6 million after two weeks.
Moving up one spot from No. 3 to No. 2, The Bourne Ultimatum, earned $12.4 million from 3,679 locations. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the third installment in the series based on Robert Ludlum’s novels reached a total of $185.1 million after four weeks in theaters.
Down from No. 2 to No. 3, Brett Ratner’s action comedy Rush Hour 3 collected $12.3 million in ticket sales, crossing the $100 million mark after three weeks. The sequel has Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker reprising their roles as detectives Lee and Carter.
New entry Mr. Bean’s Holiday ranked in 4th place this weekend, pulling $10.1 million from only 1,714 markets. Directed by Steve Bendelack, the sequel to the 1997 hit Mr. Bean follows Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) on a bumpy ride to the south of France, where he involuntarily ends up walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. However, Mr. Bean’s Holiday failed to surpass the $12 opening weekend take of its predecessor.
Meanwhile, new entry War landed at the No. 5 slot, taking home $10 million from 2,277 theatres. The action spectacle directed by Philip G. Atwell centers on Jason Statham’s attempts to avenge himself against ruthless assassin Jet Li.
This upcoming weekend, three wide releases will compete to overthrow Superbad from the No. 1 spot.
On Wednesday, Dan Fogler will take on Christopher Walken in Robert Ben Garant’s Balls of Fury, an action comedy set in the world of illegal table tennis. Balls is expected to open in 2,800 theatres.
Later in the week, James Wan, director of Saw, will return to the big screen with Death Sentence, a thriller starring Kevin Bacon as a father who swears revenge against those who murdered his son. The movie will open in 1,900 locations.
Also opening wide is Rob Zombie’s version of Halloween, in which he offers audiences a new take on the legend that became Michael Myers.
Limited releases include The Nines, a thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, and Johnnie To’s Exiled, a drama about two hitmen who face a difficult dilemma while on a mission to kill a former associate.

I can’t understand why Mr. Bean is sopopular. don’t find the guy funny. but i guess many people do.
