TRANSFORMERS Battles Its Way to the Top of the Box Office
Transformers rose to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$67.6 million.
The extravagant summer blockbuster directed by Michael Bay and starring Shia LaBeouf and Tyrese Gibson opened at 4,011 sites on July 3, and managed to lift its total haul to an impressive $152.5 million over the weekend.
Last week’s winner Ratatouille slipped to No. 2, taking home $29 million from 3,940 sites and reaching a cumulative gross of $109.5 million after only two weeks. However, the new Pixar adventure directed by Brad Bird failed to surpass the results from last year’s Cars, which collected $117 million after a two-week run.
Meanwhile, Live Free or Die Hard dropped to the No. 3 spot, earning $17.4 million in ticket sales. Directed by Len Wiseman and starring Bruce Willis as John McClane, the fourth film in the popular Die Hard series lifted its total haul to $84.2 million.
New entry License to Wed, a marital comedy starring Robin Williams, landed on the No. 4 spot, pulling $10.4 million.
Down from No. 3 to No. 5, Tom Shadyac’s biblical comedy Evan Almighty scored $8.1 million this weekend, reaching a cumulative gross of $78.1 million after three weeks in release.
This upcoming weekend, two new major releases will battle for the top spot at the North American box office.
On July 11, Daniel Radcliffe will return as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth installment in the famed series based on J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Its only competition is Captivity, a claustrophobic horror-thriller starring Elisha Cuthbert as a top model being tortured by a mad man.
