Helen Mirren, John Malkovich in Robert Schwentke’s Red
Kevin Greutert’s gory horror flick Saw 3D topped the North American box-office chart this past Halloween weekend (Oct. 29-31), collecting $22.53m according to actuals published at Box Office Mojo.
Adding about $1.7m from Thursday midnight screenings, Saw 3D’s total reached $24.23m by Sunday evening. Expect a major drop-off rate next weekend.
Saw 3D features Tobin Bell, Cary Elwes, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, Chad Donella, and Costas Mandylor.
Last weekend’s champ, Tod Williams‘ Paranormal Activity 2, took in $16.5m in second place.
Robert Schwentke’s Red, starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, and Morgan Freeman, scored $10.72m at no. 3.
At no. 4, Johnny Knoxville’s Jackass 3D drew $8.5m, down 60.1%.
At no. 5, Clint Eastwood’s drama Hereafter, featuring Matt Damon, Cécile De France, and Bryce Dallas Howard, brought in $6.42m (-46.6% from last weekend), followed by Diane Lane’s horse-racing drama Secretariat with $5m.
Next in line were David Fincher-Jesse Eisenberg’s The Social Network with $4.51m at no. 7 and the Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel-Josh Lucas comedy Life As We Know It with $4.05m at no. 8.
Rounding out the top twelve were Ben Affleck-Jeremy Renner-Jon Hamm’s The Town with $1.97m, Hilary Swank-Tony Goldwyn-Sam Rockwell’s Conviction with $1.83m, Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole with $1.75m, Emma Stone’s Easy A with $1.06m.
Gone from the top twelve were Oliver Stone-Michael Douglas-Shia LaBeouf’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Davis Guggenheim’s Waiting for ‘Superman,’ though either one could return to the chart once Legend of the Guardians suffers its inevitable weekday plunge.
Among the top-twelve movies (not including new entry Saw 3D and the expanded Conviction), The Town posted the smallest weekend-to-weekend drop-off rate, -28.1%. Jackass 3D posted the steepest, -60.1%.
Also among the top twelve, Saw 3D, partly thanks to 3D surcharges (more than 90% of its revenues came form 3D houses), had the highest per-theater average, $8,024. Easy A had the lowest, $846.
