Pitt lost to Jean Dujardin, who plays a John Gilbert-like silent film star whose career goes downhill with the advent of talking pictures. Pitt and Dujardin’s fellow SAG Award nominees were George Clooney for Alexander Payne’s family drama The Descendants, featuring Shailene Woodley and Judy Greer; Demián Bichir as an undocumented Mexican immigrant living in Los Angeles in Chris Weitz’s A Better Life; and Leonardo DiCaprio as the all-powerful FBI honcho J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s poorly received J. Edgar, featuring Judi Dench and Best Supporting Actor SAG Award nominee Armie Hammer. (Hammer lost to Beginners‘ veteran Christopher Plummer.)
Accompanying Brad Pitt at the SAG Awards 2012 ceremony was Angelina Jolie, who wasn’t in the running for anything. Yet, Jolie did get a Golden Globe nomination (in the Best Foreign Language Film category) for her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, set during the Bosnian War. The film also won the Producers Guild of America’s Stanley Kramer Award.
