Chris Hemsworth, Thor
Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston, grossed $5.4m on Monday, May 9, down a relatively modest 68% according to Box Office Mojo.
At no. 2, Fast Five, starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, and Dwayne Johnson, collected $2.52m. Fast Five’s per-theater average fell below the $1,000-per-day mark for the first time: $690 on Day 11.

The Angela Bassett-Paula Patton comedy Jumping the Broom pulled in $1.09m at no. 4, down a whopping, Tyler Perry-like 81% from Sunday. It could be that much like Perry’s films, Jumping the Broom will be strictly a weekend attraction. It remains to be seen whether it’ll also have as short a box-office life span as Perry’s flicks.
Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon-Christoph Waltz’s Water for Elephants was next with $518k, up one spot at no. 5. It was followed by Rio, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, with $425k, down one spot at no. 6.
Next in line were Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family with $259 at no. 7 and AnnaSophia Robb’s Soul Surfer with $116k at no. 8.
Rounding out the top twelve were Glenn Close-Hayden Panettiere’s Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil with $113k, Patrick Wilson-Rose Byrne’s Insidious with $102k, Aimee Teegarden-Thomas McDonell’s Prom with $101k, Jake Gyllenhaal-Michelle Monaghan’s Source Code with $100k.
Among the top-twelve movies Thor had the highest per-theater average, $1,366 — nearly 37 times higher than the lowest, Prom’s $37.
Also among the top twelve, Soul Surfer posted the highest Sunday-to-Monday drop-off rate, -86.5%; Insidious posted the lowest, -64%.
