Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s True Grit once again topped the US/Canada box office on Tuesday, Jan. 4. The acclaimed remake of the 1969 John Wayne Western grossed $2.16m according to Box Office Mojo. Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin star.

At no. 2, Paul Weitz’s Little Fockers brought in $2m. The poorly received Universal comedy stars Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson, Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, and Jessica Alba. Both True Grit and Little Fockers were down 17.5% compared to Monday.

At no. 3,TRON: Legacy collected $1.75m. Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fier stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.

At no. 4, Darren Aronofsky-Natalie Portman’s Black Swan scored $1.33m. Its per-theater average was $857, the second-highest among the top twelve movies despite a drop-off rate of 11% from the day before.

Black Swan was followed by David O. Russell’s The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo, which pulled in $1.16m at no. 5.

Up three spots, Colin Firth-Geoffrey Rush’s The King’s Speech drew $862k at no. 6. The likely Oscar contender was actually down 12% from Monday, but that was a much less steep drop than the ones of movies aimed at children. Yogi Bear, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Gulliver’s Travels, and Tangled were all down 25%-37%.

Following The King’s Speech were Eric Brevig’s Yogi Bear, featuring the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, with $794k at no. 7 and Michael Apted’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader with $791k at no. 8.

Rounding out the top twelve were Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp’s The Tourist with $741k, Disney’s Tangled with $714k, Jack Black’s Gulliver’s Travels with $625k, and James L. Brooks-Reese Witherspoon-Paul Rudd’s How Do You Know, back among the top twelve with $526k.

Among the top-twelve movies, The King’s Speech had the highest per-theater average, $1,232 — once again the only average above $1,000. Gulliver’s Travels had the lowest, $202.

Also among the top twelve, How Do You Know posted the lowest Monday-to-Tuesday drop-off rate, -3%. Tangled posted the highest, -37%.
