
Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, The Karate Kid
Starring Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith,and Taraji P. Henson, Harald Zwart's The Karate Kid was the no. 1 movie at the North American box office on Wednesday, June 16. The remake of the 1984 drama starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita scored $5.22m according to figures found at Box Office Mojo.
The Karate Kid was down for the third day in a row, -6.9%. One more drop like this, and the film will fall below the $5m per day mark. Even so, it'll cross the $75m mark sometime today (Thursday), and will surely cross the $100m mark this weekend, despite strong competition from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 3 for the kiddie market.
Joe Carnahan's The A-Team, starring Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, and Sharlto Copley, grossed $2.6m in second place.
At no. 3, Shrek Forever After, featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Julie Andrews, earned $1.89m, followed by Jonah Hill and Russell Brand's comedy Get Him to the Greek with $1.43m at no. 4.
Next in line was the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine Heigl comedy-actioner Killers with $1.03m at no. 5 and Sarah Jessica Parker's Sex and the City 2 at no. 6 with $818k.
Marmaduke, about a talking dog with Owen Wilson's voice, was no. 7 with $762k, right ahead of Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time's $759k.
Rounding out the top twelve were Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man 2 with $536k, Adrien Brody's Splice with 375k, Russell Crowe's Robin Hood with $311k, Christopher Egan's Letters to Juliet with $264k.
Among the top twelve movies, The Karate Kid had the highest per-theater average, $1,425 (below $1,500 for the fist time). Splice had the lowest, $153.
Also among the top twelve,The Karate Kid had the worst drop-off rate from Monday, -6.9%. Get Him to the Greek posted the highest increase, +8.3%.
