Rhys Wakefield in Alister Grierson’s Sanctum
Monday, Feb. 7, wasn’t exactly a great day at the North American box office. Not a single movie earned more than $1m; in fact, not one earned more than $900k — or $810k, for that matter. The top ten movies were down 13% compared to last week, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo.
On this unexciting box-office day, the no. 1 movie — for the first time — was the 3D underwater adventure flick Sanctum, executive-produced by James Cameron, and directed by Alister Grierson. Sanctum brought in $808k.
That was followed by the weekend’s top release, Christian E. Christiansen’s thriller The Roommate, featuring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, with $706k.
At no. 3, the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy No Strings Attached collected $653k. Right on its heels, Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, drew $627k.
Up two spots at no. 5, the Jason Statham-Ben Foster actioner The Mechanic earned $551k.
Next in line were the Anthony Hopkins-Colin O’Donoghue horror flick The Rite with $503k at no. 6 and the Seth Rogen-Jay Chou adventure flick The Green Hornet with $408k at no. 7.
At no. 8, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, scored $393k.
Rounding out the top twelve were Darren Aronofsky-Natalie Portman’s Black Swan with $304k, Ron Howard-Vince Vaughn’s The Dilemma with $241k, Mark Wahlberg-Amy Adams‘ The Fighter with $238k, Danny Boyle-James Franco’s 127 Hours, back among the top twelve with $136k.
Among the top-twelve movies, The Roommate had the highest per-theater average, a lowly $672. The Dilemma had the lowest, $165.
Also among the top twelve, The Green Hornet posted the highest Sunday-to-Monday drop-off rate, -59%. True Grit posted the lowest, -37%.
