Jean Dujardin was the somewhat surprise winner, as most had been expecting George Clooney to take home SAG's The Actor statuette for his performance in Alexander Payne's family drama The Descendants. Dujardin and Clooney's SAG Award competitors were Demián Bichir for Chris Weitz's A Better Life, Brad Pitt for Bennett Miller's Moneyball, and Leonardo DiCaprio for Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar. Last Sunday, Dujardin also won the British Academy of Film's Best Actor Award. He's now the odds-on favorite in the Oscar race.
Among Dujardin's other movie credits are two James Bond-ish spoofs directed by Michel Hazanavicius: OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in Rio. Additionally, Dujardin starred or was featured in numerous French productions, among them Ca$h, Brice de Nice / The Brice Man, Lucky Luke and the Daltons, Welcome to the Roses, The Clink of Ice, Little White Lies, and Nicole Garcia's recent A View of Love, featuring Marie-Josée Croze and Toni Servillo. Dujardin's upcoming movies include The Players, and (reportedly) Möbius and A Stormy Summer Night.
Besides Dujardin, The Artist cast includes Hazanavicius' off-screen companion and OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies leading lady Bérénice Bejo, Barton Fink's John Goodman, Chaplin/The Freshman's Penelope Ann Miller, Miss Nobody's Missi Pyle, Babe's 1995 Oscar nominee James Cromwell (son of director John Cromwell and actress Kay Johnson, both of whom were around at the dawn of the sound era), A Clockwork Orange/Caligula's Malcolm McDowell, and Golden Collar Award winner Uggie the dog.
The Artist's cast lost to ensemble found in Tate Taylor's socially conscious comedy-drama The Help: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Sissy Spacek, Cicely Tyson, Jessica Chastain, Chris Lowell, Mike Vogel, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ahna O'Reilly, Mary Steenburgen, and Allison Janney.
Now, will Jean Dujardin be the next James Bond villain?
