Jackass 3D, starring Johnny Knoxville, brought in $21.8m on Friday (including Thursday midnight screenings), topping the North American box office and far surpassing estimates, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo.
At no. 2, Red, a comedy-actioner based on a violent graphic novel, also surpassed expectations by collecting $7.5m on Friday. Red stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, and Mary-Louise Parker.
Other bit of box-office news: Emma Stone’s Easy A crossed the $50m mark on Friday. Total to date: an estimated $50.53m.
Down two spots at no. 3, David Fincher’s The Social Network, featuring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Rooney Mara, drew $3.32m.
The Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel-Josh Lucas comedy Life As We Know It was no. 4 with $3.06m, followed by Secretariat, starring Diane Lane and Red’s John Malkovich, with $2.84m at no. 5.
Life As We Know It and Secretariat may switch positions by Sunday evening.
Ben Affleck’s The Town, featuring Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, and Rebecca Hall, pulled in $1.23m at no. 6.
Next in line were Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole with $1.04m at no. 7 (which may go up one spot by Sunday) and Wes Craven’s 3D horror flick My Soul to Take, featuring Max Thieriot, with $1m at no. 8.
Rounding out the top twelve were Emma Stone’s Easy A with $855k, Oliver Stone-Michael Douglas-Shia LaBeouf’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps with $715k, new entry N-Secure with $430k, Ryan Fleck-Anna Boden’s It’s Kind of a Funny Story with $395k.
Directed by David M. Matthews, and featuring Cordell Moore, Essence Atkins, and Denise Boutte, N-Secure averaged a paltry $885 at 486 theaters. The crime drama will be far gone from the top-twelve chart by next weekend.
Gone from the top twelve on Friday — though a couple of those may be back on the chart before the weekend is over — were Renée Zellweger-Bradley Cooper’s Case 39 with $380k, Kristen Bell-Jamie Lee Curtis-Odette Yusman-Sigourney Weaver’s You Again with $371k, and Matt Reeves‘ Let Me In.
Among the top twelve movies, Jackass 3D had the highest per-theater average, $7,076 (including Thursday midnight screenings), followed by Red’s $2,212. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps had the lowest, $350.
Among the holdovers, Easy A posted the highest Thursday-to-Friday increase rate, +176.8%. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps posted the lowest, +70.1%.
