Justin Bieber and his mother, Pattie Mallette, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
Following a strong Monday, the Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler comedy Just Go with It plummeted on Tuesday, taking in $2.34m (-61%) at the North American box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
At no. 2, the 3D Justin Bieber documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never grossed $1.068m, only slightly ahead of Gnomeo & Juliet’s $1.067m. The animated film features songs by Elton John and voices by James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Matt Lucas, and Maggie Smith.
Justin Bieber, for his part, has received lots of publicity following his remarks about abortion ("I really don’t believe in abortion. It’s like killing a baby?") and health care in Rolling Stone. Regarding health care, Bieber says:
"Canada’s the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard’s baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby’s premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home."
Whether Bieber’s remarks and his Rolling Stone cover will generate more (or fewer) box-office sales for Never Say Never next weekend remains to be seen. Though, really, chances are neither the remarks nor the cover will make any difference whatsoever.
Tom Hooper’s Best Picture BAFTA winner The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, drew $688k at no. 4.
At no. 5, The Eagle earned 683k. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the period actioner stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, and Donald Sutherland.
Next in line were the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy No Strings Attached with $502.5k at no. 6 and, right on its heels, the 3D underwater adventure movie Sanctum with $502k at no. 7.
At no. 8, Christian E. Christiansen’s thriller The Roommate, featuring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, brought in $469k.
Rounding out the top twelve were Jason Statham-Ben Foster’s The Mechanic with $315k, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s True Grit with $277k, Anthony Hopkins-Colin O’Donoghue’s The Rite with $266k, Seth Rogen-Jay Chou’s The Green Hornet with $250k.
Among the top-twelve movies, Just Go with It had the highest per-theater average, $660. The Green Hornet had the lowest, $120.
Also among the top twelve, The Roommate posted the highest Monday-to-Tuesday drop-off rate, -70%. The Eagle posted the lowest, -36.5%.
