Kristen Stewart Breaking Dawn Part 2: Brazil box office record
Breaking Dawn Part 2, featuring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, broke the single-day box office record in Brazil, where the final installment in the Twilight movies sold a reported 980,000 tickets (possibly to reach over 1 million tickets when final numbers are in) -- far surpassing the previous single-day record held by David Yates / Daniel Radcliffe's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The final Harry Potter movie sold 668,000 tickets on July 15, 2011, during Brazil's mid-year school-holiday period. Now, admittedly, Breaking Dawn Part 2 had some "holiday" help as well. The final Twilight movie opened in Brazil on Thursday, Nov. 15, which is a national holiday. Even so, the numbers are phenomenal. In fact, it's possible that Breaking Dawn Part 2 may have also broken Brazil's opening-weekend box office record, but I haven't been able to find weekend ticket-sale figures.
Anyhow, according to Box Office Mojo Breaking Dawn Part 2 scored an estimated $19 million in Brazil over its initial four-day period (Nov. 15-18). The South American nation was the final Twilight film's third biggest international market following the United Kingdom ($24.4m) and Russia / CIS ($20.3m).
Breaking Dawn Part 2 is already the seventh highest-grossing 2012 release at the Brazilian box office, and before December 31 should easily surpass nearly every other 2012 movie in that country, among them Marc Webb / Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man ($30.36m) and Christopher Nolan / Christian Bale's The Dark Knight Rises ($27.09m). The two possible exceptions are Ice Age: Continental Drift ($46.5m) and the apparently unbeatable The Avengers ($63.9m). We'll see.
Distributor Paris Filmes is optimistic. It's expecting Breaking Dawn Part 2 to sell 10m tickets, or about 3 million more than Breaking Dawn Part 1. Brazil's current record holder is James Cameron's Titanic. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Cameron's mix of romantic melodrama and disaster flick sold 17 million tickets.
Kristen Stewart on the Brazilian box office chart
I should add that Kristen Stewart has two movies on Brazil's top twenty box office chart. Besides Breaking Dawn Part 2, there's Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman at no. 16, with $12.26m. Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron co-star.
And at no. 69 is Walter Salles' On the Road, in which Stewart is featured opposite Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley. Salles' road movie collected a decent (for an arthouse film) $1.6 million -- ahead of, for instance, Steven Spielberg's War Horse, the Channing Tatum / Rachel McAdams drama The Vow, Tatum and Jonah Hill's 21 Jump Street, and the 3D rerelease of George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
