Farrelly Brothers’ HALL PASS Leads Weak Friday; Nicolas Cage’s DRIVE ANGRY 3D Crashes
Down one spot at no. 2 on Friday, Feb. 25, Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller Unknown, starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, Diane Kruger, Aidan Quinn, Frank Langella, Sebastian Koch, and Bruno Ganz, collected $3.85m, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo.
At no. 3, the Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler comedy Just Go with It pulled in $3.25m.
Somewhat surprisingly down two spots at no. 4, Gnomeo & Juliet, featuring songs by Elton John, and the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Matt Lucas, and Maggie Smith, earned $3.16m. Here’s wondering if by Sunday Gnomeo & Juliet will have regained its lost ground and more — perhaps topping the domestic box office as it did last Sunday and President’s Day Monday.
I Am Number Four was actually no. 5, bringing in $3.14m. Directed by D. J. Caruso, the sci-fi-thriller features Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, and Dianna Agron.
At no. 6, the 3D Justin Bieber documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never brought in $2.65m, up a remarkable 284% compared to the day before. That was by far the largest Thursday-to-Friday attendance increase among the top-twelve movies.
Never Say Never was followed by the Martin Lawrence comedy Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son with $2m at no. 7.
Next in line was Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, the only Academy Award nominee among the top ten, drew $1.9m, down three spots at no. 8. The period drama stars Oscar nominees Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Rounding out the top twelve were Drive Angry 3D with $1.64m, Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly’s The Roommate with $625k, Jeff Bridges-Hailee Steinfeld’s True Grit with $504k, Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached with $465k.
Gone from the top twelve on Friday were Kevin Macdonald-Channing Tatum’s The Eagle and Mark Wahlberg-Amy Adams‘ The Fighter, which had briefly returned for a couple of days.
Among the top-twelve movies, Hall Pass had the highest per-theater average, $1,568. No Strings Attached had the lowest, $340.
Also among the top-twelve (barring newcomers Hall Pass and Drive Angry 3D), Justin Bieber: Never Say Never posted the highest Thursday-to-Friday gains, +284%. No Strings Attached posted the lowest, +75%.
