Amanda Seyfried-Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD Disappoints: Box Office
At no. 5, Disney’s animated 3D feature Mars Needs Moms can already be considered one of 2011’s biggest box-office flops. Budgeted at about $150m, Mars Needs Moms grossed a measly $6.8m in North America this weekend (Mar. 11-13), according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Its per-theater average was a disastrous — especially for a 3D release — $2,182 at 3,117 locations.
At no. 6, Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly’s Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate, and Richard Jenkins, took in $5.1m (-42%). Total to date: $34.93m. Cost: $36m.
Down four spots at no. 7, Beastly brought in $5.09m (-48%). Directed by Daniel Barnz, the romantic fantasy stars I Am Number Four’s Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens.
Next in line was the Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler comedy Just Go with It, which drew $4m (-38%) at no. 8. Total to date: $93.98m. Cost: $80m.
Rounding out the top twelve were:
- Best Picture Oscar winner The King’s Speech, starring Best Actor winner Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, with $3.62m. The King’s Speech was down 42% after losing 472 venues. Total to date: $129.06m. Cost: $15m.
- Gnomeo & Juliet, featuring the voice of James McAvoy and songs by Elton John, with $3.54m (-51%). Total to date: $89.03m.
- Liam Neeson-January Jones‘ Unknown with $3.37m (-42%, after losing more than 600 sites). Total to date: $58.42m. Cost: $30m.
- Alex Pettyfer’s I Am Number Four with $5.75m (-61.5%, after losing nearly 900 locations). Total to date: $50.4m. Cost: $60m.
Gone from the top twelve were Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Topher Grace’s Take Me Home Tonight (after only one week), and Martin Lawrence’s Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son.
Among the top-twelve movies, Battle: Los Angeles had the highest per-theater average, $10,536. I Am Number Four had the lowest, $1,103.
Also among the top-twelve (barring new entries Battle: Los Angeles, Red Riding Hood, and Mars Needs Moms), Just Go with It posted the lowest weekend-to-weekend drop-off rate, -38%. I Am Number Four posted the highest, -61.5%.

Mars Needs Moms is the worst movie I ever seen. Waste of money and time. I found bad reviews on it, but I did not imagine it would be so bad. There is not one single thing in the movie to enjoy. Wow what a scam to rob money from people.
