Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart: Bella and Edward together The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Twilight-related areas of the Internet have been abuzz with rumors that Robert Pattinson and Eclipse director David Slade had a serious falling-out while filming "pick-up shots" in Vancouver last week. That Pattinson arrived a day late from London and screwed up the reshoots — or pick-ups — for the film’s meadow scene.
That’s the meadow scene featuring Edward Cullen (Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), in which Edward declares his eternal love for Bella — a sequence that looked flawless (okay, in the brief teaser trailer) and that a Summit representative had previously affirmed would not be reshot.
Also according to those sources, there were intense behind-closed-door meetings, Pattinson furiously storming off, and all that good stuff that makes both online and supermarket tabloids get hits or sell copies because people enjoy reading about other people’s problems so they can feel better about themselves.
On the other hand, elsewhere those rumors have been dismissed as just that: rumors; malicious gossip. According to Summit representatives, Pattinson arrived in Vancouver when he was supposed to and did what he was supposed to have done while in town. The "meadow scene" shot in Vancouver wasn’t the meadow scene with Edward and Bella, but another outdoor sequence featuring Bella and Jacob (Taylor Lautner).
Previous Eclipse rumors had Summit Entertainment and David Slade hating each other so much — Slade’s editor had been replaced by Twilight editor Nancy Richardson a while back — that the director was being passed over for the pick-up shots. Either Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) or Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) would be handling the three-day Vancouver shoot. That didn’t happen.
Some have been doing their best to make Eclipse sound like a troubled production. It’s one of the most eagerly awaited movies of the summer. It’s part of one of the most popular literary and cinematic franchises of the early 21st century, starring three of the hottest stars of the moment. Many would love the movie to fail.
So, perhaps some of those rumors are true; quite possibly none of them is. Either way, I’m eagerly looking forward to Eclipse — and the bits I’ve seen in the two trailers look great. As I’ve said again and again, I just hope the powers-that-be at Summit won’t ditch the Edward-Bella love story so as to expand the action scenes. That would be a monumental mistake. Eclipse, after all, is a neo-Gothic love story with some action and suspense, not an action-suspense thriller with a bit of romance thrown in.
Now, sometimes I wonder if Summit — or David Slade, or Robert Pattinson, or Kristen Stewart, or Taylor Lautner, or author/Breaking Dawn co-producer Stephenie Meyer, or all of them as an ensemble — should come out in the open to talk about what was actually done in Vancouver. Explain to people that sixteen-hour shoots are hardly uncommon — much to the contrary; when movies are being shot, everyone usually has to put in long hours. Tell people what those pick-up shots actually involved. And perhaps add a picture of Pattinson and Slade buddying it up at a London pub somewhere.
Else, the malicious rumor mills will churn more dirt, however groundless. That surely wouldn’t be good for Eclipse. (Not that the pub pic would be absolutely necessary, but Pattinson photos are always welcome.) That I know of, the most that has been done in terms of "damage control" — or perhaps "rumor dispelling" would be a better way of putting it — are a couple of David Slade tweets:
So strange, I go away for three weeks and return to all these upsetting completely fabricated rumours. Who makes this stuff up as news.
REAL NEWS: last 3 weeks have gone fantastic, pick up shoot felt more like a reunion. Rob, Kristen,Taylor the crew & I gave 110%. Onwards!
On his Twitter page, Slade has also added a tirade in which he talks about the future, making snide remarks about bloggers (without naming any names). An unintelligent generalization, but I guess Slade must have been furious because of all the rumors. I’ll post his full rant shortly. It’s worth reading, even if much of it is incoherent. And ironic as well, as he dismisses bloggers after telling us to believe his “REAL NEWS” on Twitter of all places.
Directed by Slade from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens in the United States on June 30.
Also in the Eclipse cast: Bryce Dallas Howard, Kellan Lutz, Xavier Samuel, Dakota Fanning, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Elizabeth Reaser, Gil Birmingham, Kirsten Prout, Jodelle Ferland, Michael Welch, Cameron Bright, and Academy Award nominees Anna Kendrick (for Up in the Air earlier this year) and Catalina Sandino Moreno (for Maria Full of Grace, 2004).

well i think twilight saga is the best and should keep on going with more books, i think it would be so cool, that they keep on making more books as interesting as the first four. And as four the books comparing them to the movies well i honestly think they are both very well in the people that are acting and the emotion. If i were rich and you would make more books i would bay them all i really don’t understand why people jugde twilight saga. if they haven’t seen it and if they have well i guess they need to see it again. don’t worry always your biggest fan. @SCF….David Slade was following a script remember….it was written by melissa rossenberg not him. People are acting like Slade just showed up and “free-balled” the whole movie.
i agree with melchior. and twilight eclipse is a continuation of the love story….but there is an EPIC FIGHT SCENE it. so ppl just need to deal. goin out on my own limb here…the ppl who have forgotten that there is a major fight scene in the book, and don’t want to see it on the screen can excuse themselves when it gets to that part, go to the bathroom and stare at a picture of edward and bella laying in the meadow. ONWARDS TO THE ECLIPSE!
@Lisa: i agree with u, ppl are overreacting from the trailer…we have yet to see: bella’s sleepover at the cullens, time on the res, graduation, flash backs on jasper/rosalie, the PROPOSAL, meadow scene in depth, edward & bella’s trip to FL….just relax and wait for june 30.
The Twilight series is a LOVE story with action, not vice versa. My concern is that David Slade has made an action movie with a small love story. I think that when Summit and SM got a good look at it…now, they are all running around trying to fix it. I hope they succeed and it doesn’t turn out to be a disappointment.
Glad to hear it, Melchior. I meant no offense – I just don’t want the rest of the series turned into an action film with a bit of love thrown in. The series is an epic love story that has some tension and action designed to challenge our lovers. It is not an epic tale of action with a bit of a sub plot of romance. Perhaps I am being a little cynical but I think the “Hollywood Machine” often throws a “love interest” in as a token measure. Hollywood seems enamoured of special effects and where better to display them than in car chases, blowing things up, gory battle scenes and, yes, fantastical creatures! Not as much CGI etc needed for a good, old-fashioned kiss or two people holding hands and staring longingly into each others eyes! Let’s both hope they get the balance between the two right for Eclipse.
huh
if i may say so
i read the twilight books and i watched the twilight movies and im a guy
so what?
there are guys who like the books and movies
no just gay guys but guys who like girls and like love stories
i welcome the action scenes but tht doesnt mean thats all i likve or thats all every guy likes
love is good
guys like love too
Why on earth do they keep having to gear things towards a male audience? Women buy cinema tickets as well. The popularity of Twilight and New Moon are a testament to that. If a man wants to see blood, guts, violence and things getting blown up or the obligatory car chase go see things like Green Zone, Nightmare on Elm Street or Repo Man.
The Twilight Saga is a love story that triumphs despite the obstacles thrown in its way and the mistakes of the main protaganists. It is a deeply romantic series not the flipping Bourne Identity series.
Am so sick of Hollywood thinking the only audience that matters is the male one. Just another arena run by men for the benefit of men. One day ladies we will be truly equal.
I’ve been totally disappointed with the Twilight films and I’m not even a rabid fan. I just read the books and didn’t see them translated well on the screen yet…. So I’m excited to see what Slade does. By that I mean does he really capture the SOUL of the book. So far it hasn’t been done.
Okay if I hear one more time how the series need to be darker and more violent to attract males, I will throw up. Men’s egos, greed, & lust for violence is why this world is such a sh!tty place. Doesn’t Hollywood glorify that enough? What the series is only important if it’s geared toward fanboys. That’s so egotistical & so typical.
Abby-big deal, Slade made a joke about Twilight pre-director job. You realize that puts him in with the other 99 percent of men who have made similar jokes as well? Come on, this franchise is not geared for men at all.
To hold him hostage due to one flip comment he made on an radio show is truly silly and inaccurate.
David Slade is not as cuddly as CW, I understand this. CW is awesome. But he’s a man with a definite vision of what Eclipse should look and feel like, and that excites me. I’m a fan of his, loved “Hard candy” especially – the guy can go to dark places and knows a thing or two about atmosphere and dread.
I’m excited to see him bring some of “that” to Eclipse. It looks great visually so far.
oh cut that about david slade having contempt for the franchise-he wouldn’t have taken the job if he had contempt! He’s got some dark, edgey material under his belt, his background is meant to bring some flavor to the franchise that thus far has come off more Mentos commercial than flavorful. CH turned Twilight into a bad 90′s music video.CW tried to course correct, but in the end was almost too reverent with SM’s material. But David Slade? My gut instinct as a rabid twihard is that DS is going to bring the much needed wink to the franchise that’s been missing so far. A wink that shows some humor and the fact that finally, the franchise is in on the joke. And I think he’s going to find a way to make the third installment more fun and worthy of repeated viewings. So bring on the madness, David, I’m waiting eagerly! Malia – Hawaii
The final trailer was only 1 MINUTE & 39 SECONDS! So there is about 1 HOUR & 45 MINUTES of the movie we have not seen and people are literally getting all worked up from seeing .005% of the movie.
Also, there’s no need to get mad at D Slade for reacting to this nonsense….to be fair a lot of it is fueled by blogs…and fans being so anxious to know anything “twilight” they will feed into people creating news from inferences/speculation.
So, in the end bloggers are just giving readers what they want….but @ the same time alot of this “news” includes lies + speculation + bad grammar (he speaks the truth). I don’t need any chummy pics of D Slade & RPatz, or anything. I just want June 30 to get here to silence all of these temporarily confused fans….
Slade had nothing but contempt for the Twilight franchise before he was hired, and said so. then after he was hired, he went out of his way to make it about the secondary characters (Victoria and Riley). He replaced the original Victoria and hired an unknown for Riley, beefing up their parts so he had as little to do with the original actors as possible and could do as much to make it his film and not much in common with the book. Summit’s discovered this on seeing his final cut, and they’re NOT happy, but they should have given this some thought before hiring him.
It’s kind of sad, because all it shows is that he’s a sellout. If he has that much integrity, he should stay away from something he’s so above. Now he’s angry and lashing out at the established actors he’s having to add more of, and leaking defamatory gossip about them. He’s a loose cannon.
For the past few weeks, I only read and heard about the movie eclipse were negative articles…. Maybe some were true and some were not. This movie is very much-anticipated. I agree to # 1. the trailer wasn’t good. I have the strong instinct that the movie does centers to Edward and Bella’s relationship it’s more of the newborns. Yeah it’s good that the franchise have to put some actions, but they should not forget that the twilight saga eclipse revolves to Edward and Bella. I hate that when the book is adapted into film they change everything as if they murder the heart and soul of the story. It’s very disappointing as a twilight fan who have read all the books that when I watch the movies, that all the very good scenes and lines on the books are not in the movie.I’m so sad also that there were some casts have been victims of these malicious articles which don’t have evidences that they are true. I know that there are are people in the Hollywood that wants the movie to fail. But then, that will never happen.
I sincerely hope all is well and we’ll probably never know the truth. However, if Rob was truly upset then I’d say something is not good because he’s always so calm and it would take a lot for him to be angry. I didn’t like the trailer that much. It looked too much like it’s about zombies instead of newborns. Obviously Melissa R., scummit, and David Slade didn’t bother to read Page 290 in Eclipse because newborns don’t act that controlled or look that calm. Disgusting that they can’t get the little things right.
