Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Breaking Dawn Part 2 already the most popular Twilight movie at Brazilian box office
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have been losing steam at the North American box office: Breaking Dawn Part 2 is expected to gross less than $10m this weekend, possibly ending up in fourth or fifth place on the U.S. and Canada box office chart. In Brazil, however, within the next ten days the final installment in the Twilight movie franchise — which also stars Taylor Lautner — will quite possibly become the second most successful 2012 release. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, among the world’s top film markets no country has embraced Breaking Dawn Part 2 with as much gusto as Brazil. The final Twilight movie has already shattered Brazilian single-day and opening-weekend box office records — in ticket sales, which are the true measure of a movie’s popularity. And with $41.53 million (as of last Sunday, Dec. 2), Brazil is currently Breaking Dawn Part 2’s second biggest international market (in US dollars), trailing only the United Kingdom ($50.24m). For the record: down one slot at no. 3, Russia / CIS’s cume currently stands at $41.02m.
Breaking Dawn Part 2 has easily surpassed its Twilight predecessors
After only a little over two weeks, Breaking Dawn Part 2 has already become the most popular Twilight movie in Brazil. For comparison’s sake: Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight (starring only Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) sold 1.88 million tickets; Chris Weitz’s New Moon sold 5.99m; David Slade’s Eclipse sold 6.32m; Bill Condon’s Breaking Dawn Part 1 (which is partly set in Brazil) sold 7.16 million in sixteen weeks; and Breaking Dawn Part 2 sold an estimated 7.3 million as of last Sunday — including 708,000 tickets this past weekend. Notice that unlike in North America, each ensuing Twilight movie in Brazil reached a bigger audience than its predecessor.
So far this year, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the third biggest box office hit in Brazil. Bella and Edward shouldn’t have too much trouble surpassing the animated 3D movie Ice Age: Continental Drift (8.7 million tickets sold), while also leaving it behind in dollar figures ($44.5m). Having said that, it will take a miracle of vampirical proportions for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner to surpass Joss Whedon / Chris Hemsworth’s The Avengers — at least in terms of box office grosses ($63.9m). In number of tickets sales, The Avengers (10.9m) is within reach; it’ll be an uphill climb, but not an impossible one.
Distributor Paris Filmes was at first expecting Breaking Dawn Part 2 to sell 10m tickets. In about three or four months, we’ll find out if its expectations were on target. [See also: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart on the Brazilian box office chart.]
Titanic: Brazil’s most popular movie in ’history’
Brazil’s current record holder in ticket sales remains James Cameron’s Titanic. Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Gloria Stuart, Titanic sold 17 million tickets back in 1998. The runners-up are the following:
- Steven Spielberg / Roy Scheider’s Jaws (1975) sold 13 million tickets
- José Padilha / Wagner Moura’s Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010) sold 11.2 million
- The Avengers (2012) sold $10.9m
- Bruno Barreto / Sônia Braga’s Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976) sold 10.7m
- John Guillermin / Paul Newman’s The Towering Inferno (1974) sold 10.3m
- Jerry Zucker / Patrick Swayze’s Ghost (1990) sold 10m
- Steven Spielberg / Henry Thomas’ E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) sold 9.4m
- Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thermeier’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009) sold 9.2 million
- James Cameron / Sam Worthington’s Avatar sold 9.1m
Now, it’s unclear — more research is needed — if pre-1974 international blockbusters such as Gone with the Wind, The Ten Commandments, The Robe, Ben-Hur, The Sound of Music, La Dolce Vita, A Man and a Woman, and The Godfather belong to the (unrecorded) pre-history of the Brazilian box office.
