Following a weak Monday, the North American box office was mostly up on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Even so, not a single movie earned more than $850k (compared to $810k the day before). The top ten movies were down 3% compared to last week, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo.
For the second day in a row, the no. 1 movie was the 3D underwater adventure flick Sanctum, executive-produced by James Cameron, and directed by Alister Grierson. Sanctum brought in $849k.
Up two spots at no. 2, Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, drew $803k.
At no. 3, the Natalie Portman-Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy No Strings Attached collected $796k. It was followed by Christian E. Christiansen’s thriller The Roommate, featuring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, with $706k, down two spots at no. 4.
At no. 5, the Jason Statham-Ben Foster actioner The Mechanic earned $624k.
Next in line were the Anthony Hopkins-Colin O’Donoghue horror flick The Rite with $527k at no. 6 and the Seth Rogen-Jay Chou adventure flick The Green Hornet with $447k at no. 7.
At no. 8, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, scored $444k.
Rounding out the top twelve were Darren Aronofsky-Natalie Portman’s Black Swan with $404k, Mark Wahlberg-Amy Adams‘ The Fighter with $300k, Ron Howard-Vince Vaughn’s The Dilemma with $279k, Danny Boyle-James Franco’s 127 Hours with $175k.
Among the top-twelve movies, The King’s Speech had the highest per-theater average, $311. The Dilemma had the lowest, $110.
Also among the top twelve, Black Swan posted the highest Monday-to-Tuesday attendance increase, +33%. The Rite posted the lowest, +5%.
