THE HANGOVER PART II to Become Biggest Domestic Hit of 2011 Next Weekend: Box Office

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Kevin Bacon, Nicholas Hoult, Oliver Platt, and Jason Flemyng, X-Men: First Class scored $5.07 million at the North America box office on Tuesday, June 7, according to Box Office Mojo.

At no. 2, The Hangover Part II brought in $3.25m. The Todd Phillips comedy stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Justin Bartha. Some time next weekend The Hangover Part II should become the top 2011 release at the North American box office, surpassing both Fast Five and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Current totals: The Hangover Part II, $192m; Fast Five, $202m; On Stranger Tides, $194m.

At no. 3, Kung Fu Panda 2 took in $2.7m. The China-set animated actioner features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, and Gary Oldman.

Starring Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane, and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides added $2.09m at no. 4.

At no. 5, Bridesmaids pulled in $1.72m. The Paul Feig-directed comedy features Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Hamm, Rose Byrne (now with two movies among the top five), and Jill Clayburgh.

Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, and Tom Hiddleston, drew $550k at no. 6.

Next in line were Paul Walker-Vin Diesel’s Fast Five with $347k and Woody Allen-Owen Wilson’s Midnight in Paris with $323k at no. 8.

Rounding out the top twelve were Ginnifer Goodwin-Kate Hudson’s Something Borrowed with $129k, Reese Witherspoon-Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants with $105k, Jesse Eisenberg-Anne Hathaway’s Rio with $100k, Paula Patton-Angela Bassett’s Jumping the Broom with $81k.

Among the top twelve movies, Midnight in Paris boasted the highest per-theater average, $2,198. Jumping the Broom had the lowest, $138.

Also among the top twelve, Water for Elephants posted the highest Monday-to-Tuesday attendance increase, 23%. Fast Five posted the lowest, +0.1%. X-Men: First Class and Jumping the Broom were the only two movies to be down, -7% and -5%, respectively.
