
Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, The Karate Kid
Harald Zwart’s The Karate Kid, which stars Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith,and Taraji P. Henson, was the no. 1 movie at the North American box office for what will surely be the last time (the film’s seventh day out) on Thursday, June 17. (Toy Story 3, bound to become the biggest hit of the summer, opened today.)
Down 16.3% from the day before (the NBA game affected movie attendance across the board), The Karate Kid grossed $4.37m — falling way below the $5m per day mark — according to Box Office Mojo.
Joe Carnahan’s The A-Team, starring Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, and Sharlto Copley, grossed $2.04m in the second spot.
At no. 3, Shrek Forever After, featuring the voices of Cameron Diaz,Antonio Banderas, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Julie Andrews, earned $1.66m.
Both Get Him to the Greek and Killers fell below the $1m per day mark. Jonah Hill and Russell Brand’s comedy took in $974k at no. 4, while the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine Heigl comedy-actioner scored $889k at no. 5.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sex and the City 2 at no. 6 with $733k, followed by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with $689k and Marmaduke, about a talking dog with Owen Wilson’s voice, with $682k.
Rounding out the top twelve were Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 with $469k, Sarah Polley’s Splice with 306k, Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood with $265k, Vanessa Redgrave’s Letters to Juliet with $254k.
Among the top twelve movies, The Karate Kid had the highest per-theater average, $1,193. Splice had the lowest, $125.
Also among the top twelve, Get Him to the Greek had the steepest drop-off rate from Wednesday, -32%. Letters to Juliet had the smallest, -3.7%.
