The Karate Kid with $52m for the weekend? No one was expecting that (in case that early estimate is indeed accurate.) The studio certainly wasn't, according to Nikki Finke at Deadline.com.
Most were predicting that The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith (Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's son) and Jackie Chan, would gross around $25-$30m on opening weekend. According to Finke's piece, early, rough estimates indicate the remake of the 1984 semi-classic starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita grossed about $19m on Friday alone.
Starring Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson, among others, The A-Team, a big-screen version of the '80s TV series that starred George Peppard and Dirk Benedict, earned an estimated $9.5m on Friday for a potential weekend total of $27m. Most had been predicting something within the $25-$35m range.
At no. 3, Shrek Forever After grossed about $4.5m on Friday, $17.5m rough estimate for the weekend. Next is Jonah Hill and Russell Brand's Get Him to the Greek with $3.2m on Friday and $9.5m for the weekend.
And at no. 5, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl's Killers, with $2.6m on Friday and $8m by Sunday evening.
Finke has more details about the expected top-ten movies of the weekend, in addition to some information about what may have gone wrong with The A-Team.
