ALICE IN WONDERLAND Box Office: Another 15% Weekday Drop

Alice in Wonderland remained at the top of the North American box office on Wednesday, March 10, grossing $6.772 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Tim Burton’s fantasy blockbuster had a relatively small 15.1 percent drop from Tuesday.

Considering that Alice in Wonderland is to a certain extent perceived as a kids' story, the consistent weekday revenue decreases shouldn't be too surprising. In that regard, Avatar has been performing way better since its opening last December, with minuscule day-to-day changes throughout the week. We shall see how well Alice in Wonderland does this coming weekend.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, and the voices of Stephen Fry, Barbara Windsor, and Michael Sheen.

At a very distant #2, Martin Scorsese’s dark thriller Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, took in $970K (-11.9%), while Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest earned $810K (-21.8%). The cop drama stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, and Wesley Snipes.

James Cameron’s Avatar held steady at #4 with $747K (-4.4%), while Kevin Smith’s comedy Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, was #5 with $633 (-15.7%). Breck Eisner’s horror flick The Crazies, with Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell, was next with $511K (-15.1%).

At #7, Jeff BridgesCrazy Heart earned $351K (-17.9%). Garry Marshall’s all-star Valentine’s Day was next with $278K (-8.1%). The romantic comedy stars Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Carter Jenkins, Taylor Swift, and many others. Following right behind, Chris Columbus‘ adventure flick Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, starring Logan Lerman, grossed $271K (-5.7%).

Rounding out the top twelve were the Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried romantic melodrama Dear John ($218K, -9.5%), Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side ($154K, -9.4%), and Benicio del Toro’s The Wolfman ($146K, -5.7%).

One day before the teaser trailer for the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was released online, the previous installment of the Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart-Taylor Lautner supernatural drama series, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, added another $15K to its take. New Moon will still be around when Pattinson’s first major non-vampire vehicle, the romantic drama Remember Me, opens on Friday.
