As a film for both adults and children, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (above, with Helena Bonham Carter) will surely dominate this weekend's box office. How forceful that "domination" will be remains to be seen. Even if the adventure-fantasy drops by 50 percent, that will still mean a remarkable $60 million over the next three days — but figures could go even higher.
Alice in Wonderland's runners-up are geared toward young and older adults: the Paul Greengrass-Matt Damon Iraq War drama Green Zone and Robert Pattinson's first post-Twilight starring vehicle, Remember Me, a romantic drama featuring Emilie de Ravin and Pierce Brosnan. Amazingly, the Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart-Taylor Lautner supernatural drama The Twilight Saga: New Moon added another $20K to its take on Thursday — that was the film's Day 121.
Reviews for both Green Zone and Remember Me have been mixed. According to Daniel Frankel at The Wrap, Universal, Green Zone's distributor, is expecting an opening weekend gross in the "upper teens." If so, that could prove troublesome for the $100 million production.
In addition to Remember Me, which Summit expects to earn between $8 and $10 million — a modest amount for a movie opening at more than 2,000 screens — the distributor is rereleasing at 349 screens another Iraq War drama, The Hurt Locker, winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow).
Also opening today are the teen comedy She's Out of My League, the Forest Whitaker-America Ferrera ensemble piece Our Family Wedding, and Bong Joon-ho's award-winning Korean drama Mother.
