Kenneth Turan on MILITARY INTELLIGENCE AND YOU!

Military Intelligence and You! by Dale Kutzera

Military Intelligence and You! with Mackenzie Astin, Elizabeth Ann BennettKenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times:

"Military Intelligence and You! is two movies for the price of one. It’s both a loving spoof of World War II films and a pointed satire on America’s involvement in Iraq. These two different aims complement each other surprisingly well, the geniality of the spoof making it possible for the satire to effectively hit its targets."

"Cleverly intercut with this old footage is a modern story shot in crisp black and white. While the old stuff shows how the Germans try and break our boys via devious interrogation, the new footage shows American military intelligence helping us win the war. For, as the narrator helpfully informs us, ‘what we call military intelligence distinguishes deadly enemies from merely annoying foreigners.’"

Writer-director Dale Kutzera’s Military Intelligence and You! combines the use of several WWII military training films, including Bernard Vorhaus‘ Oscar-nominated Resisting Enemy Interrogation (1944), and WWII Hollywood flicks featuring the likes of William Holden, Alan Ladd, Elisha Cook, Jr., and Ronald Reagan, with the on-screen stories of Major Nick Reed (Patrick Muldoon), a military analyst out to get the Nazis’ Ghost Squadron; his former gal, Lt. Monica Tasty (Elizabeth Ann Bennett); her current lover, the pragmatic strategist Major Mitch Dunning (Mackenzie Astin); and Gen. Jake Tasker (John Rixey Moore), who, as per Turan’s review, "spends a lot of his time changing the threat level from orange to tangerine to butterscotch."
