Richard Edlund, James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow

Visual effects supervisor Richard Edlund, James Cameron, and Kathryn Bigelow at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscar Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on Monday, February 15, 2010.

Richard Edlund has won two competitive Academy Awards — for Star Wars (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) — in addition to two Special Achievement Awards, for The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). (All of Edlund's awards were shared with other visual effects technicians.) James Cameron is in the running this year for three Academy Awards for Avatar: Best Director, Best Editing (shared), and as one of the producers of the Best Picture nominee. Kathryn Bigelow is a Best Director nominee for the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker. She's only the fourth woman to get a nomination in that category.

The 2010 Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 7 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. In the United States, it’ll be televised live by ABC.
