Oscar Shorts at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present "Shorts!," featuring the ten Academy Award-nominated films in the Animated Short and Live-Action Short categories, on Tuesday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The event will feature onstage discussions with the animated and live-action nominated filmmakers (subject to availability).
The 2005 Animated Shorts and Live-Action Short nominees are:

Oscar 2006: Nominations

The Academy Award nominations are in.
Brokeback Mountain (above, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) led the pack with 8 nods. Crash, Good Night and Good Luck., and Memoirs of a Geisha tied with six nominations each, while Munich and Capote received five nominations apiece. Of the aforementioned six films, the one left out of the best picture race was Memoirs of a Geisha.
Even though he’s not a film, George Clooney also received multiple nominations, three in all: best director and best original screenplay (with Grant Heslov) for Good Night and Good Luck., and a best supporting actor nod for Syriana. Oscar 2006: Robert Altman to Receive Honorary Oscar

Iconoclastic director-producer-writer Robert Altman, 80, will be the next recipient of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences‘ Honorary Award, to be presented at the the 2006 Academy Awards ceremony next March 5. The Honorary Award will be given to Altman for "a career that has repeatedly reinvented the art form and inspired filmmakers and audiences alike."
Altman has never won an Oscar despite five Academy Award nominations for directing — for M*A*S*H (1970), Nashville (1975), The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), and Gosford Park (2001) — in addition to nominations as a producer of best picture nominees Nashville and Gosford Park.
In the last 55 years, he has directed nearly 90 features, made-for-TV movies, and episodes from [...]

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven semi-finalists for the 2006 sound editing Academy Award. They are (in alphabetical order):

Oscar 2006: 311 Films Eligible for Best Picture

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 311 feature films will compete for the Academy Award for best picture of 2005. That is a 16.5% increase from 2004, and it is also the first time in 32 years that more than 300 motion pictures have vied for the best picture award.
According to Academy Credits Coordinator Howard Loberfeld, the unusually high number of competitors is a result of both an increase in the number of feature-length documentaries playing theatrically (35 versus 15 in 2004), and the release of long-delayed projects by companies such as Miramax, which has undergone a major overhaul.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven films in consideration for best visual effects for the 2006 Academy Awards.
They are:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
King Kong
Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds

 

Oscar 2006: Best Song Longlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 42 original songs are being considered for the 2006 Academy Awards.
As per the Academy’s press release, three-minute clips of each song, in random order, will be shown to music branch voting members on January 17 and January 23. At these screenings, members will vote to nominate three to five songs.
In order to be eligible for Oscar consideration, a song must consist of original lyrics and music written specifically for the film.
Nominations for the 2006 Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at 5:30 a.m. PST, in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
