Sandra Bullock Backstage at the Oscars Part I: Kissing Meryl Streep; Ryan Reynolds Naked
Q.	Sandra, congratulations.
A.	Thank you.
Q.	I just would love to hear the story about Clooney throwing you in a pool.
A.	Yeah. See I could have taken that moment and gotten him back. There was also Tom Cruise involved in that as well, and I told them one day, in a very public forum, I would get them back, but George looked so tired tonight. I saw his little eyes and said, I can’t do it to him tonight. Yeah. It was you might want to ask George [...]

Best Actress Oscar winner Sandra Bullock (Rick Salyer / ©A.M.P.A.S.)

Sandra Bullock’s chat with entertainment reporters can be seen below following her Academy Award win on March 7. Bullock discussed the unexpected success of The Blind Side, her "surprising" Oscar win, and Meryl Streep’s fun-loving character, but refused to give details about George Clooney being mean to her or to tell a questioner what husband Jesse James whispered in her ear when she was named the year’s Best Actress.
The transcript below (in two parts; follow the link at the bottom) is from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
A.	It’s like an auction in here with the numbers.

Sandra Bullock’s separation from reality show personality Jesse James, her husband of nearly five years, has become major news because the actress has just won a Best Actress Academy Award. Just yesterday, she canceled her appearance at the London premiere of The Blinde Side due to "unforeseen personal reasons."
“I leave you alone at the table and you come back with Morgan Freeman’s e-mail," Bullock told James during her SAG Awards acceptance speech. "I don’t know how you do it … I love you so much! And you’re so hot!" This was in late January. At the Oscars on March 7, Bullock thanked her mother, mothers in general, her "lover" Meryl Streep, and expressed her admiration for her fellow Best Actress [...]

At the North American box office, Crazy Heart (above), The Blind Side, and The Hurt Locker were the only three movies that benefited from their Oscar victories last Sunday.
Starring Jeff Bridges as a down-and-out country singer who strikes up a relationship with a younger woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Crazy Heart earned Bridges the Best Actor Oscar, in addition to another statuette for Best Original Song ("The Weary Kind" by T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham).
More than any other film, Crazy Heart has been immensely helped by the awards season buzz. Following Bridges’ win the film lost a mere 5.7 percent from the previous weekend — the smallest decrease among the top twelve films at the North American box office according [...]

I watched the Best Actress announcement hoping against hope that Meryl Streep would pull an upset. She didn’t. I started watching Sandra Bullock’s speech hoping she would mention her Worst Actress Razzie victory the previous evening, but gave up on it a few seconds later. After those "This Is Your Life" homages, I couldn’t take any more speeches — even though I’d only managed to watch the first minute or so of Michelle Pfeiffer’s homage to Jeff Bridges before I tuned out.

I did watch most of Ben Stiller’s introduction to the Best Makeup award, chiefly because I was wondering if he was going to mention Sacha Baron Cohen. Although Stiller’s humor is of the sort that brings out the axe murderer in me, I actually chuckled a couple of times thanks in part to reaction shots of James Cameron. (Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis, seemed to be enjoying herself much more than he was at first.) I also found it curious that Stiller was dressed up as a Na’vi when Avatar didn’t get a makeup nomination, as much of the Na’vi look was created by computer graphics artists, not makeup artists.

Jean Simmons, Paul Newman in Until They Sail

Jean Simmons, who died this past January, was remembered in this year’s In Memoriam segment at the 2010 Oscar ceremony. Well, great. Simmons was a fantastic actress. As far as I’m concerned, she stole Hamlet from Laurence Olivier, Elmer Gantry from Burt Lancaster, and Spartacus from Kirk Douglas.
But why an image of Jennifer Jones in The Song of Bernadette (right) above Simmons’ name? Oops!
That mistake reminded me of another homage a few years back, when on the occasion of the Oscar’s Grand 75th Anniversary the Academy honored every Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress winner with a one-minute (or whereabouts) montage.
The very first actress to win the Oscar was Janet [...]

Best Actor Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine, Best Supporting Actress nominee Betsy Blair in the 1955 Best Picture winner Marty

I skipped most of the speeches and presentations at the Oscar 2010 ceremony, but I made a point of watching the In Memoriam segment just to see who was going to be included and who was going to be left out. As usual, once it was over I was feeling more irritated than moved.
One thing that always both amuses and annoys me whenever I watch that tribute is that audience members applaud the names they recognize — e.g., Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy, David Carradine, none of which was an actual movie star, but whose deaths received a lot of publicity [...]

Kathryn Bigelow, Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand, who was almost nominated for a Best Director Oscar a couple of times in the past, was chosen to present the 2010 Best Director Oscar at Sunday’s ceremony. "From among the five gifted nominees tonight, the winner could be, for the first time, a woman," Streisand told the audience at the Kodak Theatre. And just in time, too: Monday, March 8, was International Women’s Day. After looking at the name inside The Envelope, Streisand editorialized, "Well, the time has come."
For the first black filmmaker to win the Best Director Oscar? For the first openly gay filmmaker to win the Best Director Oscar? (Lee Daniels in both instances.) Or perhaps even for the first [...]

I can’t say if the Oscar 2010 ceremony was dull or deadly because I didn’t watch most of it. In fact, I watched maybe a total of fifteen minutes overall — thirty seconds here; 45 seconds there; a couple of minutes further down the line. Come to think of it, I wonder how many of the 43.1 million who supposedly watched this year’s Oscarcast actually sat through the whole three-hour-thirty-minute thing. Or even half of it. Or a third.
I was disappointed — but hardly surprised — that none of the Hurt Locker filmmakers mentioned the people of Iraq or the election held in that country on Sunday. Kathryn Bigelow dedicated her Best Director award to "the women and men [...]
