ALICE IN WONDERLAND Box Office: Record-Breaking Weekend

Alice in Wonderland has shattered a number of box-office records after grossing an estimated $116.3 million this weekend, according to figures provided at Box Office Mojo. Tim Burton’s revamped version of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy tale far surpassed Disney’s pre-release expectations, while delivering the best opening weekend ever for a 3D film. For comparison’s sake, James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure Avatar grossed $77 million on its opening weekend in mid-December 2009. (Though, admittedly, Avatar had a fierce winter storm on the East Coast to contend with.)

300 – Gerard Butler – d: Zack Snyder

300 (2007)
Direction: Zack Snyder
Screenplay: Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, Michael B. Gordon
Cast: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, David Wenham, Rodrigo Santoro

300 may not be the most sophisticated war epic to hit the big screen, but with its series of mesmerizing tableaux and extreme graphic violence the film unquestionably succeeds in dazzling its audience. In other words: Watching 300 is like watching a video game that plays itself.
Set in 480 B.C.E., 300 recounts the fate of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) of Sparta, as he led three hundred of his men to battle the superior Persian army of Xerxes the Great (Rodrigo Santoro). The battle was fought at Thermopylae, where Leonidas and his outnumbered soldiers struggled to block the only route [...]

Berlin Film Festival 2007: Part I
A few other titles that sound intriguing:

Inspired by Frank Miller’s drawings and directed by Zack Snyder, 300 depicts the battle of Thermopylae in the year 480 B.C.E. At that decisive battle, King Leonidas of Sparta and a mere 300 followers confronted invader King Xerxes‘ brush-stomping Persian army. If the film looks even half as good as the stills, it’ll win every cinematography and production design award for 2007. But I wonder if 300 will display anything resembling intelligent storytelling, or if it’ll simply be a series of extended battle sequences glorifying bravery, honor, sadism, and all those great [...]
