Helen Mirren in The Queen (top); Brad Pitt in Babel (middle); Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose in Dreamgirls (bottom)

The Directors Guild of America has announced the five features nominated for the 2007 DGA Award.
The biggest surprise was the absence of the much-revered Clint Eastwood — for either Flags of Our Fathers or Letters from Iwo Jima, or both — winner of last year’s DGA Lifetime Achievement Award. (In The Envelope, Tom O’Neil states that DGA members, who weren’t able to receive screeners this year, didn’t get a chance to check out Letters from Iwo Jima, which opened late in December.)
Also missing from the DGA list were Paul Greengrass, whose United 93 has been chosen best film of [...]

With nine nominations, including best film and best director (Alejandro González Iñárritu), Babel (above) seems to be the Chicago Film Critics Association’s favorite 2006 flick.
Among the other multiple nominees are The Departed and The Queen, both of which are in the running for best film and best director (Martin Scorsese and Stephen Frears, respectively).
The two biggest surprises among the Chicago critics’ list were the inclusion of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi.
There are six nominees for the best actress slot — I’m assuming that’s how Gyllenhaal was able to sneak in for her performance as an ex-con who discovers motherhood in the little-seen Sherrybaby. She has also been nominated for a best actress – drama Golden Globe [...]

21 Grams (2003)
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Screenplay: Guillermo Arriaga
Cast: Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melissa Leo, Danny Huston, Eddie Marsan, John Rubinstein

Shot in documentary-style, 21 Grams is a bleak, convoluted, and surprisingly powerful drama about three individuals linked to both one another and to the immediacy of death: Paul (Sean Penn) is a dying man in dire need of a heart transplant; Jack (Benicio Del Toro) is a born-again ex-con who has run over a father and his two daughters as they were crossing a street; and Cristina (Naomi Watts) is the woman whose family Jack has killed. (By the way, the film’s title refers to the alleged weight of a person’s soul. That figure came [...]
