There were a couple of  surprises among the American Film Institute&#8217;s feature-film choices for its AFI Awards 2009:  Todd Phillips&#8216; low-brow box-office smash The Hangover and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck&#8217;s little-seen Sugar.
The story of Dominican baseball player (Algenis Perez Soto) who dreams of one day joining the  major leagues, Sugar was a particularly interesting pick as thus far it hasn&#8217;t been getting all that much attention from US critics&#8217; groups. The sports drama got a Spirit Award nomination for best screenplay (that was a year ago) and a  best ensemble Gotham Award nod a few weeks ago. That&#8217;s basically it.

James and the Giant Peach (above, top), Coraline (middle), and The Nightmare Before Christmas (bottom) will be screened at a mini-retrospective on the films of animator Henry Selick  presented by the American Film Institute at the ArcLight Hollywood tomorrow, Dec. 10, beginning at 5:00 pm. 
Coraline is one of 20 animated features vying for an Oscar nomination this year. Additionally, Selick&#8217;s 3-D fantasy received 10 Annie Award nominations from the International Animated Film Society &#8212; more than any other film this year. (Pete Docter&#8217;s Up came in second, with nine nods.)

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced former Warner Bros. Chairman  and CEO Robert A. Daly has been elected Chair of the AFI Board of Directors.  The Board of Directors acts as an  executive committee, setting the institute’s priorities and overseeing its  programs.  Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman  and CEO of the Sony Corporation, remains Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees. 
 Daly succeeds Jon Avnet and  John Cooke, who served with distinction as Co-Chairs for the Board of Directors  for 8 years.  Both men remain on as  Directors, and Avnet continues on as Vice-Chair of the Trustees. 
 Also voted to return to the  AFI Board of Trustees were leaders from [...]]]></description>
