The BAFTA surprises weren’t major surprises, except for one: the Outstanding British Film was Andrea Arnold’s gritty Fish Tank instead of the more internationally recognized An Education. Nominated for eight BAFTAs, An Education ended up winning only one: Best Actress for Carey Mulligan, whose victory could be considered "a surprise" only in the sense that across the Atlantic she has no chance — or almost no chance — of winning the Oscar.
But in her home turf, Mulligan’s chances were anything but nil. An Education has been widely praised and [...]

Katie Jarvis, Michael Fassbender in Fish Tank

A PROPHET Beats AVATAR
Curiously, even though A Prophet was also in the running in the London Film Critics‘ Foreign Language Film of the Year category, it lost to Tomas Alfredson’s vampire drama Let the One Right In, which received a whole array of US critics’ awards early last year. (The film opened in the US in 2008.)
The top winner of the evening, however, was Andrea Arnold’s family drama Fish Tank, which earned awards for British Film of the Year, British Director, British Newcomer (Katie Jarvis), and British Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender). The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow — another woman — was Director of the Year. Bigelow, in fact, was the first female to win [...]

The winners of London’s Evening Standard awards were announced on Monday, Feb. 8. Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank (above), the tale of a working-class teenager (Katie Jarvis) who resents her mother’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender) was chosen as the best British film of 2009. Although it’s been received warmly by critics, Fish Tank is up for only one BAFTA Award: Best British Film.
Anne-Marie Duff was the best actress winner for her performance as young John Lennon’s mother in Sam Taylor-Wood’s film debut Nowhere Boy (Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan was also in the running for An Education). Andy Serkis, best known for his Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, was voted best actor [...]

Ben Whishaw, Abbie Cornish in Bright Star (Apparition)

The winners of London’s Evening Standard awards will be announced at the London Film Museum on Monday, Feb. 8. Curiously, all three best picture nominees were either directed or co-directed by women: Jane Campion’s Bright Star, about the love affair between John Keats and Fanny Brawne; Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, in which a teenager rebels against her mother’s new boyfriend; and Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s Helen, the tale of two friends, one of whom has gone missing. Neither of the Bright Stars leads, Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish, was nominated, but Fish Tank’s Katie Jarvis is up for the most promising newcomer award.
Anne-Marie Duff was shortlisted in the best actress [...]

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is next with 15 mentions, followed by Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker with 12. Sam Rockwell in Moon

Duncan Jones‘ sci-fi thriller Moon — made for US$5 million, or about 1/zillionth of the cost of Star Trek, 2012, or Avatar — won best picture and best debut director honors at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) held this evening in London.
Written by Nathan Parker from Jones’ original story (with shades of 2001: A Space Odyssey), Moon tells the story of a man (Sam Rockwell) living with a computer — that’s GERTY — at a manufacturing base on the Moon, where one day he wakes up to discover that he isn’t as alone as he thought. Worse yet, things have never actually been as he thought they were.

Derek Elley on Looking for Eric (above, Ken Loach and Eric Cantona) in Variety:
"… helmer Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty’s ninth feature together is a curious hybrid: Three movies — boilerplate, socially aware Loach; personal fantasy; romantic comedy — wrap around a central core of a hopeless soccer fanatic who’s given a second chance to sort out his life. As in many of Laverty’s scripts, problems of overall tone and character development aren’t solved by Loach’s easygoing direction, though when it works, Eric has many incidental pleasures."

Helen Mirren in The Queen (top); Forest Whitaker in The Last King of England (bottom)

Perhaps there’s something I’m missing here, but the Orange British Academy of Film and Television Arts has decided that Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King of Scotland is the outstanding British film of 2006, coming out ahead of United 93, Notes on a Scandal, Casino Royale, and Stephen Frears‘ The Queen. Yet, that very same Orange Academy has picked The Queen as the best film of the year, defeating Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, The Departed, and … The Last King of Scotland. Go figure.
There were few surprises at the 2007 Bafta ceremony held at London’s Royal Opera House this evening, unless one considers a Helen Mirren victory [...]
