Another winner at the 2010 Palm Springs Film Festival was Ruben Östlund’s Involuntary, Sweden’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The quirky film set during the Swedish summer season received the FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. Other FIPRESCI winners were best actor Tedo Bekhauri for The Other Bank (Georgia/Kazakhstan), directed by George Ovashvili, and best actress Anne Dorval for I Killed My Mother (Canada), directed by Xavier Dolan.

I KILLED MY MOTHER Wins Toronto Film Critics’ Special Award
Xavier Dolan, François Arnaud in I Killed My Mother (Regent Releasing)
Xavier Dolan, whose I Killed My Mother is Canada’s submission for the 2010 best foreign language film Academy Award, has been chosen as the Toronto Film Critics Association’s first recipient of the Jay Scott Prize for emerging talent. The honor includes a cash prize of $5,000.
I Killed My Mother premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won three awards. In the film, 19-year-old filmmaker Dolan plays a gay teenager who has some serious hang-ups with his single mother (Anne Dorval). Also in the film’s cast: François Arnaud, as the young man’s boyfriend, and Suzanne Clément as his teacher.

Xavier Dolan’s semi-autobiographical J’ai tué ma mère / I Killed My Mother has been getting a lot of attention, mostly because Dolan is 19 and has won three awards at Cannes for his first film. A former child actor, Dolan spent some of his acting money to make this film about an adolescent (played by himself) who hates his mother.
