2007 Golden Globes Winners
Everything — at least as far as the winners were concerned — went according to plan at the 2007 Golden Globe awards ceremony. That is, until the very last winner of the evening was announced: Babel.
Babel??
Set in multiple countries, in multiple time frames, and with dialogue in multiple languages, Babel (above, with Rinko Kikuchi) was a multiple Golden Globe nominee (7 nods in all, more than any other film) and a multiple loser. As the evening progressed, Babel lost to Dreamgirls (best supporting actress Jennifer Hudson and best supporting actor Eddie Murphy), The Departed (best director Martin Scorsese), The Queen (best screenplay, Peter Morgan), and even The Painted Veil (best music, Alexandre Desplat).
And then, just like one [...]

2006 Chicago Film Critics Awards: Nominations
With nine nominations, including best film and best director (Alejandro González Iñárritu), Babel (above) seems to be the Chicago Film Critics Association’s favorite 2006 flick.
Among the other multiple nominees are The Departed and The Queen, both of which are in the running for best film and best director (Martin Scorsese and Stephen Frears, respectively).
The two biggest surprises among the Chicago critics’ list were the inclusion of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi.
There are six nominees for the best actress slot — I’m assuming that’s how Gyllenhaal was able to sneak in for her performance as an ex-con who discovers motherhood in the little-seen Sherrybaby. She has also been nominated for a best actress – drama Golden Globe [...]

2007 Golden Globes: Nominations
Following the announcement of the 2007 Golden Globe nominations early yesterday morning, I watched three entertainment "journalists" discussing the choices of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) as if they meant significantly more than the outcome of good marketing tools.
In all fairness, the same can be said about nearly every other group, no matter how self-important, that gives out film awards. After all, their choices are usually the result of p.r. and marketing strategies, past or expected box-office revenues, and personal or professional politics.
That said, those types of biases — who, when, where is giving out awards to which films and individuals — are exactly what make those myriad film awards worth reporting. By looking at the choices, [...]
