Agence France-Presse reports that the radical nationalist Hindu groups Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Jananagruti have succeeded in getting the International Film Festival of India, held in the old Portuguese territory of Goa, to withdraw Maqbool Fida Husain’s 1967 documentary short Through the Eyes of Painter.
Husain, 93, who has been called India’s Picasso, became enmeshed in the mid-1990s in an ugly uproar over his paintings of nude Hindu goddesses, for which he was sued and received death threats from Hindu fanatics. He currently divides his time between London and Dubai.
The 39th Goa Film Festival — all the poorer for having caved in to censorship forces — comes to a close on December 2.

By Dan Schneider of Cosmoetica:
I watched the 1996 Canadian film Fire by Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta after having long heard of its taboo nature based mainly on its depiction of lesbianism. And while not a silly film — such as the softcore When Night Is Falling or the horrid Hollywood ‘Hook’em’ Brokeback Mountain — Fire is nowhere near a great film, either.
As for the lesbianism, there is very little skin and the ‘love story’ is rather demure. On the other hand, there is far too much radical Feminist (capital F) ideology that lowers the intellectual argument of Mehta’s film — [...]

"Real people with an aberrant sexual orientation have also led to Bollywood tentatively moving away from its song-and-dance routine for fresh cinema. Deepa Mehta’s Fire, released in 1998, ventured into forbidden terrain by exploring the sensual relationship of a young bride with her sister-in-law. Mahesh Dattani, whose Mango Souffli [sic] ([photo,] 2002) breaks away from hackneyed romantic imagery with an erotic under-water gay kissing scene, believes that a number of Bollywood films caricature homosexuals. As a result, shopping for actors to perform a gay role becomes difficult. When not making movies, Indian film personalities seem to spend a lot of their time fighting one another in court.
Following the long soap opera revolving around allegations of bias and corruption at the National Film Awards, the Mumbai High Court has found the Film Federation of India’s (FFI) pick to represent the Indian film industry at the Oscars was "prima facie biased."
This latest courtroom drama began when filmmaker Bhavna Talwar (left) and WSG Pictures, whose Dharm (above, top photo) was passed over as India’s Oscar entry in favor of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya: The Royal Guard (above, lower photo), filed a petition alleging favoritism.
In their petition, Talwar and WSG claim that selection committee director Sudhir Mishra and members Jagdish [...]

Set in the Indian holy city of Varanasi, the Hindi-language Water is now eligible as a Canadian entry for the foreign-language Oscar because of recent regulation changes enacted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year. Prior to the changes, countries could only submit films containing a large chunk of dialogue in one of their official languages. Now, any language is acceptable as long as most of the dialogue is not in English.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be presenting a restored print of Jean Renoir’s 1951 drama The River. Though largely forgotten today, The River remains one of Renoir’s best films. The performances may leave much to be desired and the plot may seem a tad too slight, yet, The River exudes an atmosphere of spirituality such as has rarely been captured on film. Highly recommended.

THE OFFICIAL LIE
The tale of an Indian-American young woman who, while visiting her adoptive family in Delhi, discovers the shocking — and politically charged — truth behind her adoption, Shonali Bose’s Amu (India / U.S.) is the sort of well-intentioned motion picture one wants to like. Sadly, that is not quite the same thing as actually liking it.
Yet, despite its flaws in storytelling, direction, and acting — one crucial problem is leading lady Konkona Sen Sharma’s inability to convey her young heroine’s profound growing pains — Amu is definitely worth a look because of its politics. Generally, political films fail to make their point clear, diluting [...]

Meera, Ashmit Patel in Nazar

OutlookIndia.com reports that Pakistan’s Ministry of Culture has imposed a "heavy fine" on Pakistani actress Meera.
The reason for the Ministry of Culture’s stern ruling? Meera kisses her Indian co-star Ashmit Patel in Mahesh Bhatt’s supernatural Bollywood thriller Nazar; the kissing scene was deemed against "Islamic ethics and moral values."
The government, which is apparently afraid that Pakistanis will emulate Meera’s vile deed and start kissing one another, is considering a ban on Pakistani actors from acting in Indian films.
As per a BBC report, Meera has asked for government protection "from extremists here who have threatened my life." Some film critics, however, have asserted that the actress’ statement is a publicity gimmick.
