A good surprise at the American Society of Cinematographers awards ceremony held Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles: Christian Berger won the ASC Award for Best Cinematography for his work on a "small" black-and-white foreign-language film, Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon. Berger’s competitors were in the running for movies with a much higher profile: Barry Ackroyd for The Hurt Locker, Mauro Fiore for Avatar, Robert Richardson for Inglourious Basterds, and Dion Beebe for Nine.
Berger’s win marked the first time a foreign-language feature film won the ASC Award. The White Ribbon is also the second black-and-white movie to win in the last ten years, following the Roger Deakins-shot The Man Who Wasn’t [...]

Oscar Nomination Snub #10

Michael Nyman for The Piano (1993), The End of the Affair (1999)
Gordon Willis for The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), All the President’s Men (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979), etc.
Caleb Deschanel for The Black Stallion (1979), Being There (1979)

Those nominated — or not nominated — in the "technical" categories tend to be ignored by most of the media and Oscarwatchers in general. So, it’s not like there was widespread screaming, eye-rolling, and gnashing of teeth over the fact that Michael Nyman’s haunting scores, and Caleb Deschanel’s and Gordon Willis‘ masterful camerawork failed to receive Academy Award nominations a while back. Even so, many were outraged.

The nominees for the 2005 American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award in the feature film category are:

Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron, Collateral
Bruno Delbonnel, Un long dimanche de fiançailles / A Very Long Engagement
Caleb Deschanel, The Passion of the Christ
Pawel Edelman, Ray
Robert Richardson, The Aviator

The big surprise in this year’s ASC list was that critics’ favorites Christopher Doyle and Xiaoding Zhao were not included among the five finalists for their work in the Chinese films Hero and House of Flying Daggers, respectively. Roberto Schaefer of Finding Neverland was also another notable absentee.
On the other hand, the inclusion of The Passion of the Christ cinematographer Caleb Deschanel shouldn’t come as a surprise [...]
