The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2010 WGA Awards. Both Avatar (James Cameron) and The Hangover (Jon Lucas and Scott Moore) have been nominated in the best original screenplay category. Wow. They’ll be competing with the scribes of (500) Days of Summer (Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber), The Hurt Locker (Mark Boal), and A Serious Man (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen).
It gets better: Nora Ephron is up for a best adapted screenplay WGA Award for Julie & Julia, and so are Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman for [...]

Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds (François Duhamel / The Weinstein Co.)

Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s violent World War II fantasy, was the Phoenix Film Critics Society’s best picture of 2009. (See full list below.) Tarantino was chosen best director, while the film’s cast, which includes Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, Diane Kruger, and Christoph Waltz, was cited as the year’s best ensemble cast.
Although Inglourious Basterds has been mentioned before as best picture of the year (e.g., Toronto, tied with Steve McQueen’s Hunger), that particular category has been dominated by Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker and Jason Reitman’s socially conscious dramatic comedy Up in the Air.
More predictable were the acting winners: George Clooney for Up in the Air, [...]

Anna Kendrick, George Clooney in Up in the Air (Dale Robinette / Paramount)

Up in the Air bagged one more US film critics’ award: The St. Louis Film Critics have chosen it as the best film of 2009. The runner-up was the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker.
George Clooney was voted best actor for Up in the Air, with Patton Oswalt for Big Fan coming in second place. The Best Actress was Carey Mulligan for her London school student ready to have her first sexual experience with a man about twice her age in Lone Scherfig’s An Education. Mulligan was followed by Gabourey Sidibe’s illiterate pregnant teen in Lee Daniels‘ Precious.

George Clooney in Up in the Air

Nomi Morris on Up in the Air in GlobalPost, via The Huffington Post:
"This year, the film that has generated the greatest buzz is Up in the Air, the latest by [Jason] Reitman, director of the hits Juno and Thank You for Smoking, and son of Hollywood director Ivan Reitman (Ghost Busters). Up in the Air stars [George] Clooney as a "termination engineer," who has no home life outside of his job, jetting around the country helping American companies fire people. Both funny and sad, the film examines a society where frequent flier points become a substitute for family attachments. Reitman used documentary footage of 25 real people who had lost their jobs in Detroit [...]
