Maurice Jarre, best known for his Oscar-winning association with David Lean in films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and A Passage to India (1984), died in his sleep on March 28 at his home in Malibu after a brief illness. Some reports claimed that Jarre had cancer. He was 84.
Throughout his five-decade career in film and on television Jarre was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning Oscars for the three aforementioned films with Lean. (Following Lawrence of Arabia, Lean only made three more films, all with Jarre as composer. Their other collaboration was Ryan’s Daughter in 1970.)
Jarre also won two British Academy Awards — for Witness (1985) and Dead Poets Society (1989); four [...]

It’s that time of the year…
Note: Those aren’t my personal top-ten snubs, e.g., I couldn’t care less if, say, Dreamgirls got nominated or not, and I certainly don’t think Bruce Beresford deserved a best director nod for the coy Driving Miss Daisy. But lots of people did think that Dreamgirls and Beresford deserved Oscar recognition — and that’s what this list is all about.
So, here they are, in installments — the list got to be much too long — from #10 to #1:

Michael Nyman for The Piano (1993), The End of the Affair (1999)
Gordon Willis for The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), All the President’s Men (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan [...]

"Jai Ho" sound clip. Posted by Marycarmenrod.

In December, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that forty-nine songs are contending for a spot in the 2009 Academy Awards‘ Best Original Song category.
Three to five songs will receive a nomination. A maximum of two songs may be nominated per film. If more than two songs from a film end up in contention, the two songs with the most votes will be the nominees. In other words, no five High School Musical 3: Senior Year nominated songs. (Last year, Enchanted received three nominations — all of them in the best song category.)
As per Academy rules, "to be eligible, a song must consist of [...]

Over his 45-year career, prolific composer-conductor Ennio Morricone has created more than 500 scores for both films and television — including my all-time favorite movie score, the Once Upon a Time in the West ballad.
He will finally be given his Oscar due on February 25, 2007, when he’ll be picking up an Honorary Academy Award for his contributions to film art. More than a film composer, Morricone has been frequently the lone savior of poor films made bearable — at times even memorable — merely because of his compositions.
Thus far, Morricone has earned five Academy Award nominations for original score — for Days of Heaven (1978), The Mission (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Bugsy (1991) and Malena [...]

A brief quote:
"The Pagan, an MGM feature released in April of 1929, hit the mark with escapist minded audiences and devout fans of it’s [sic] star, Ramon Novarro, alike. Although a silent film with a synchronized music, vocal and sound effects score, The Pagan had enough drawing power to succeed at a time when theaters were swelling with all-talkie product. Visually stunning, and containing what many justly believe to be Novarro’s signature performance and perhaps even role of a lifetime, [the] success of The Pagan was also due in no small way to the film’s theme song, which swept the country and [...]
