Pete Docter’s Up was the best picture winner and Docter was the best director at the Annie Awards ceremony held Saturday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles. The favorite movie did win the top two prizes — but that was it. With three awards each, Coraline and The Princess and the Frog were the evening’s top animated feature winners.
But at least Up’s best picture victory avoided a repeat of last year’s outrage following the Kung Fu Panda sweep when WALL-E was the odds-on favorite. Up is the favorite to win this year’s Best Animated Feature Academy Award. It’s also the second ever animated feature to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. Best Animated Feature
Pete Docter’s Up

Peter Docter’s Up should take the Golden Globe for best animated feature. It’s a huge box-office success that has been greeted by some of the best reviews of the year. Although Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox has its fans and has won a number of awards from film critics’ groups, it doesn’t really stand much of a chance here.
The other nominees in this category are Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline, and The Princess and the Frog. Even though all three movies did generally get good reviews, none of them is on a class with either Up or Fantastic Mr. Fox in terms of critical response. And none gets even close to Up [...]

Pete Docter’s Up (Disney / Pixar) (top); Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (Fox Searchlight Pictures) (bottom)

Although Pete Docter’s Up was expected to have the animation year-end awards field all to itself, it ultimately had to face tough competition from Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, which features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Jason Schwartzman, among others.
Up has won awards from at least 14 US-based groups, while Fantastic Mr. Fox has won 7. Both are up for a Golden Globe and for a best animated feature Annie Award. Coraline is the only other animated feature to win an award this season, from the San Francisco film critics. It’s also up for a Golden Globe and an Annie Award.
