AFI FEST 2009: POLICE, ADJECTIVE; TO DIE LIKE A MAN

AFI FEST 2009 continues in a more compact version on Friday and Saturday at the Santa Monica Laemmle Theater 4 on 2nd Street in Santa Monica. There’ll be only four screenings per day, with the last one starting at 5:00 p.m.
The screening films on Friday, Nov. 6, are:
Japanese filmmaker Sabu’s Kanikosen, described as "Sergei Eisenstein put into a blender with Busby Berkeley."
João Pedro Rodrigues‘ To Die Like a Man, a chronicle of a Lisbon drag queen who has been living as a woman for decades, but ends up meeting her maker as a man. Rodrigues is the director of the intriguing O Fantasma.

The deadline to submit entries in the Live Action Short Film, Animated Short Film and Foreign Language Film categories to be considered for the 82nd Academy Awards: Thursday, October 1.
Complete entries must arrive at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 5 p.m. PT that day.
As per the Academy’s press release, "in the short film categories, filmmakers must submit an entry form, one film print or copy in an approved digital format, and all other required materials by the deadline.

Films from the New Europe at USC
The University of Southern California is presenting the mini-festival "Films from the New Europe" on Friday, February 29, and Saturday, March 1, at the Norris Cinema Theatre/Frank Sinatra Hall in downtown Los Angeles. All screenings are free and open to the general public, but individual reservations will be required for each screening.
As per the USC website, the showcase includes "recent feature films and animated shorts from Eastern and Southern Europe that directly engage with post-Cold War transformations and the rethinking of what European identity and European cinema mean.
