The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 134 artists and executives to join its roster in 2009.
As per the Academy’s press release, all the various branches could pick a maximum of 166 new members, but as in the previous years "the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them."
Most of the invitees are actors, among them several previous Oscar nominees, e.g., Casey Affleck, Melissa Leo, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and lots of young talent, e.g., James Franco, Michael Cera, James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Seth Rogen, Emile Hirsch. (But where are Robert Pattinson and Zac Effron??)

Matteo Garrone’s organized crime drama Gomorrah (above, top photo), based on Roberto Saviano’s polemical book, took top honors at the 2009 David di Donatello awards. The Italian Film Academy voted Gomorrah the best Italian film of the year and Garrone the best director, in addition to handing the film five other awards, including best screenplay and best producer.
Paolo Sorrentino’s Il Divo (above, lower photo), which also deals (however indirectly) with the mafia, also received a total of seven statues (out of 16 nominations), including the best actor trophy for star Toni Servillo’s brilliant caricature of former Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti, and a best supporting actress win for Piera Degli Espositi.

Following his DGA win, Danny Boyle is the odds-on favorite to win the best director Academy Award. In fact, Boyle has been the odds-on favorite for quite some time. (Actually, more like six times as there was some overlapping in the 1948-49 selections. Check out the DGA Awards/the Oscars.) Slumdog Millionaire has also won the Producers Guild Award.

BEST DIRECTION
Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon)
Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight)
Gus Van Sant (Milk)

Runners-up: Mike Leigh (Happy-Go-Lucky), who may pull off another Vera Drake upset and take Ron Howard’s place; Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road); the idolized Clint Eastwood (Gran [...]

"Danny Boyle’s latest film, Slumdog Millionaire, about an orphan from the Mumbai slums who reaches the final of the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is winning awards all over the place (including Best Film and Best Director at BIFA). We should all go to see it, but perhaps not because of the superlatives that it is consistently squeezing from the pens of critics, but because of what it tells us about Mumbai’s social inequality in the wake of the recent attacks.
"Who exactly does want to be a millionaire in Mumbai? The answer is, pretty much everyone. And how many will actually [...]
