Marilyn Chambers
Marilyn Chambers, known for her erotic films of the 1970s, died Sunday at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Canyon Country. She would have turned 57 on April 22. The cause of death is still unknown; Chambers was found by her daughter.
Born Marilyn Ann Taylor (or Marilyn Ann Briggs) in Westport, Connecticut, in 1952, former Ivory Snow soap-box girl Chambers became an adult-film superstar after appearing in the 1972 production Behind the Green Door, which became a sensation of sorts because the actress was seen having sex with a black man, Johnny Keyes. Directed by Artie and Jim Mitchell, Behind the Green Door became one of the first sexually explicit films to be widely released [...]

Genie 2008 Nominations
The two top nominees for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television’s 2008 Genie Awards are heavy dramas: David Cronenberg’s Russian mafia thriller Eastern Promises and Roger Spottiswoode’s Rwanda genocide tale Shake Hands With the Devil, each with 12 nominations.
They were followed by Away from Her with seven nods; The Tracey Fragments with six; Continental, a Film Without Guns and Silk, both with five; and Days of Darkness with four.
The violent Eastern Promises, which is up for the best British film BAFTA (it’s a co-production), stars American Viggo Mortensen and Australian Naomi Watts as two disparate people — he a Russian hitman; she a midwife — whose paths are crossed following the death of a pregnant 14-year-old girl. 2006 Palm Springs Film Festival Awards
2006 Palm Springs Film Festival: January 5-16, 2006
Set in French Indochina shortly before World War II, Minh Nguyen-Vo’s Buffalo Boy depicts the coming-of-age journey of a teenager while transporting his family’s buffalos to safer pastures during the region’s seasonal floods. The line-up of the 17th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival included 232 films from more than 70 countries. Among the festival highlights were Breno Silveira’s Two Sons of Francisco, one of Brazil’s biggest box-office hits ever (and the cause of much consternation to Brazilian President Lula, who was caught watching a pirated DVD of the film); Cristina Comencini’s Don’t Tell, a drama about the consequences of incest-rape and Italy’s submission [...]

2006 National Society of Film Critics Award Winners
Capote, which follows flamboyant writer Truman Capote while he was working on In Cold Blood, was chosen the best film of 2005 by the National Society of Film Critics. As most elsewhere this year, smaller American films and non-American productions took center stage in the voting.
Among the other winners were best director David Cronenberg for the social critique A History of Violence, which failed to win the best film award by one single vote, after six rounds of voting; best actor Philip Seymour Hoffman (above, with Catherine Keener) for Capote; best actress Reese Witherspoon for playing another real-life character, June Carter, in Walk the Line; and best foreign film Gegen die Wand / Head-On, Fatih Akin’s drama [...]

2005 Golden Globes: Nominations
Big-budget studio releases were mostly cast aside by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose Golden Globe nominations were announced today.
As to be expected, critics’ favorite Brokeback Mountain, about the mostly long-distance love affair between two men in the American West, ruled the pack with seven nominations. Since the Globes don’t cover any of the technical awards, Jake Gyllenhaal (above, with Heath Ledger) ended up being the only major talent in that film left without a nod.
The biggest surprise was probably the absence of Steven Spielberg’s Munich from the best picture – drama shortlist. Spielberg’s tale of terrorism and revenge, based on actual events, had been touted by those who had neither seen it nor read about it as [...]
